However, HP co-founder Bill Hewlett began development of a "shirt-pocket sized HP-9100", and it turned out that the marketing studies were wrong.
The display was unique in that the multiplexing was designed to illuminate a single LED segment at a time, rather than a single LED digit, because HP research had shown that this method was perceived by the human eye as brighter for equivalent power.
The fifteen digit LED display was capable of displaying a 10 digit mantissa plus its sign and a decimal point and a two digit exponent plus its sign.

In one of the most amazing displacements in the history of technology, the HP-35 Scientific Calculator electronic calculator, and others like it, quickly replaced the faithful slide rule that had been used by generations of engineers and scientists for rapid calculation and simple computation.
Bill Hewlett, who, in 1968, had challenged HP engineers to make a desktop-size computer (the 9100A), challenged them again in 1971 to take that desktop computer and make it small enough to fit into his shirt pocket.

The first HP calculator with a letter as well as a number was the HP-25C - this was a version of the HP-25 with "Continuous Memory", in other words the contents of memory were not lost when the calculator was turned off.

The Internal Revenue Service has signed a contract with a Hewlett-Packard Co. reseller to purchase more than $35 million worth of new HP desktop and notebook PCs for its employees.
In a statement, HP said it would supply the IRS with more than 12,300 Compaq Evo desktop PCs and monitors and more than 11,000 Compaq Evo N800 notebooks through an IRS contract with HP reseller PlanetGov Inc. in Chantilly, Va.
Pat Gallagher, director of business development at HP, said that Dell Computer Corp., one of its competitors, had previously supplied equipment to the IRS, but the agency realized HP could provide the agency with higher-quality products at a lower cost.
