Was created a Knight of the Garter, Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth, and Baron Greenwich on the eve of his marriage to HM Queen Elizabeth II.
In 1947, the Duke of Edinburgh was granted the style of "His Royal Highness", and was permitted to use the same coronet on his coat of arms as is used by younger sons of the sovereign.
