Coutts Bank, the private-banking arm of Royal Bank of Scotland Group, said it was starting to target India and China as part of a bid to double its number of wealthy Asian-Pacific clients to about 8000 in the next two to three years.

At HSBC's corporate, investment banking and markets business, earnings fell 18 percent in the first half as costs jumped and a decline in the gap between long- and short-term interest rates hurt revenue, the bank reported.
``The most difficult credit market currently remains the U.K.,'' HSBC's Bond said in a statement, citing interest rate increases in 2004, slower growth in jobs and a cooling property market.
