HSBC acquired a 51% shareholding in Marine Midland banks of New York State, headquartered in Buffalo, New York, in 1980 and extended to full ownership in 1987.
In October 2001, HSBC acquired Demirbank TAS, the fifth largest private bank in Turkey from the Turkish financial regulator after it was rescued during the financial crisis, and its wholly-owned stockbroking and fund management subsidiary, Demir Yatirim.

HSBC owns Hang Seng Bank after which the Hang Seng Index for stock prices in Hong Kong is named; it is one of the three banks which issues banknotes for Hong Kong (the other two being the Bank of China and Standard Chartered Bank).
The Hong Kong headquarters of the bank are in Central, Hong Kong, in the HSBC Tower, designed by the British architect Norman Foster.

HSBC said its offer for Bital was worth about $1.20 per share on a fully diluted basis -- a premium of about 20 percent to Bital's Tuesday closing price -- and a total of $1.14 billion, assuming tender of 100 percent of the shares.
HSBC said Bital's board was recommending the offer, while controlling shareholders with 52 percent of its shares had agreed to tender them.
HSBC said at the start of this month that chargeoffs in Argentina and Hong Kong cut into its profits, which fell 7 pecent for the first half of the year (full story).
