Nov 19 2003 : HSBC in Malta has advised that the recent debit card scam affecting some of its accounts was probably committed with technology from the UK, where HSBC experienced a similar fraud on a much larger scale.
Ironically, Malta’s banking industry had in April circulated an e-mail warning of ATM skimming activity, but local banks dismissed this advice, arguing that existing ATM security was sufficient.
HSBC is reported to be upgrading its ATMs to more tamper-proof models, “but there is no guarantee that fraudsters will not try again at a later stage”, the source said.
