CodeProject: Image Processing for Dummies with C# and GDI+ Part 6 - The HSL color space. Free source code and ...
HSL is the most common color system that exists to be human friendly, rather than machine friendly.
Most HSL color pickers present a hue wheel with varying saturation from the centre to the edge, and then a slider to set luminance for the chosen hue/saturation combination.
I was trying to order them using their hsl values like you would in a color picker, but that mixes in gray and white colors with regular colors because they have the same hue but very low saturation.

HSL color space - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
HSL is similar to HSV but better reflects the intuitive notion of "saturation" and "lightness" as two independent parameters, and is therefore more suitable for use by artists.
In HSL, the Saturation component always goes from fully saturated color to the equivalent gray (in HSV, with V at maximum, it goes from saturated color to white, which may be considered counterintuitive).
In software, a hue-based color model (HSV or HSL) is usually presented to the user in the form of a linear or circular hue chooser and a two-dimensional area (usually a square or a triangle) where you can choose saturation and value/lightness for the selected hue.

colorspace-faq -- FAQ about Color and Gamma
Color is the perceptual result of light in the visible region of the spectrum, having wavelengths in the region of 400 nm to 700 nm, incident upon the retina.
The colors that can be mixed from a particular set of CMY primaries cannot be determined from the colors of the primaries themselves, but are also a function of the colors of the sets of combinations of the primaries.
A direct color image can be converted to indexed color with an image-dependent colormap by a process of color quantization that searches through all of the triples used in the image, and chooses the palette for the image based on the colors that are in some sense most "important".

Color space FAQ   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The colors are described as direct colors, it means that all the pixels (or vectors, for vectorial descriptions) are directly stored with the full components.
In this case, all the colors are stored in a table called a palette and the components of all the colors for each pixel (or the vector data) are removed to be replaced with a number.
The white color is reflected on the sheet so that the components of white (primary colors) are subtracted from the components of the 'painting' (secondary colors).

 Color Space
Let's start with a color space that we are all familiar with, the RYB color wheel of paint we used in grade school.
This is a subtractive color space, as more paint pigment is added to the mixture the more light is absorbed and the darker the color becomes, (remember the disappointing dark brown that resulted at the end of our joyous experiments in adding paints together).
The secondary colors are purple (a mixture of blue and red), orange (a mixture of red and yellow), and green (a mixture of yellow and blue).

 Color
Color is often thought of in terms of a color space, where RGB (red, green, blue), HSL (hue, saturation, luminosity), and HSV (hue, saturation, value) are the most commonly used color spaces.
The color wheel, where red is 0 degrees, yellow is 60 degrees, green is 120 degrees, cyan is 180 degrees, blue is 240 degrees, and magenta is 300 degrees.
In the HSL color space, having a darker color means a color with a lower luminosity.

CodeProject: Color Picker with Color Wheel and Eye Dropper. Free source code and programming help
The color in the color wheel is represented by its hue and saturation value, where hue is the angle (0-360) with red being 0°, green 120° and blue 240°, and where the saturation is the distance from the center, where 0 (center) is white and 1 (on the circumference) is the fully saturated color.
Since the color in the color wheel is represented by the angle (Hue), it is a matter of looping from 0 to 360 in ‘degrees’ steps.
A saturation of 0 means the selected color is at the center of the circle, and a saturation of 1 means the selector's distance from the center is equal to the radius of the circle.

Advantages of HSL are that it is symmetrical to lightness and darkness (which is not the case with HSV for example), and it is trivial to convert HSL to RGB.
The format of an HSLA color value in the functional notation is 'hsla(' followed by the hue in degrees, saturation and lightness as a percentage, and an , followed by ')'.
User agents may default the 'flavor' color to the dominant accent color used on the physical machine/mechanism that the user is interacting with (frequently a mouse, keyboard, monitor and computer case, often just a laptop), if the UA is able to retrieve that information from the platform and machine.

RGB color spaces - Psychology Wiki
A particular RGB color space is defined by the three chromaticities of the red, green, and blue additive primaries, and can produce any chromaticity that is the triangle defined by those primary colors.
The primary colors are specified in terms of their CIE 1931 color space chromaticity coordinates (x,y).
The CIE 1931 color space standard defines both the CIE RGB space, which is an RGB color space with monochromatic primaries, and the CIE XYZ color space, which works like an RGB color space except that it has non-physical primaries that can not be said to be red, green, and blue.

 HSL Colorspace
The HSL color space defines colors more naturally: Hue specifies the base color, the other two values then let you specify the saturation of that color and how bright the color should be.
In the HSL color wheel the saturation specifies the distance from the middle of the wheel.
The third parameter in the HSL color space is the luminance: It lets you specify how "bright" the color should be: 0 means, the bringhtness is 0, and this means, the color is fl.

Automated inspection guarantees color - Vision Systems Design
Perceived color depends on the intensity and direction of the illuminating light and the texture and shape of the illuminated surface.
The advantage of the HSL is that uncontrollable confounding factors generally affect the saturation and luminance dimensions, leaving the hue unaffected.
Since, the accept/reject analysis operates in HSL color space, not physical space, it does not matter where the pixels are in the field of view.

The problem is that their Z values are different and that a cross section of the space in the X,Y plane doesn't yield a suitable spread of the spectrum.
That color should get displayed as fl, but since it's high range color you can perform adjustments to it, and if it were to be adjusted to be brighter by adding a say (.5,.5,.5) to it, then the fl color would infact be blue.
The power behind high range color spaces is that dark colors maintain color information when out of range of the typical monitor.

This is a standard representation of HSV color space as a cone.

So as an object moves around and its colors change slightly, the change is strongly linearly related to change in H2SV color space.
