HSPVA started in 1971 just south of downtown, housed in temporary quarters in a former synagogue on Austin Street across from San Jacinto High School.
By April 1979 one HSPVA representative told the Post that backers of his group were committed to funding some of the expense but couldn't absorb the whole thing.
Mary Martha Lappe, the HSPVA development director who has been with the school since its inception, is probably right when she says these HSPVA students can truly appreciate the wonders of nature offered by the 11th Street park.

The HSPVA orchestra, dance, and art collaboration in honor of Mark DiSuvero, sculptor, included a premier of his "2nd and 3rd Episodes" during the International Sculpture Symposium in the Spring of 2000.
His main claim to fame, however, is that his daughter, Lana, graduated from HSPVA in 1993 and his wife, Sandra, worked as a volunteer in the main office during Lana's tenure here.
Lappe was one of the founders of HSPVA in 1971 and she authored and implemented the first separate, accredited dance curriculum for Texas public schools.

Anyone who attended the previous 20 HSPVA jazz festivals would have encountered a remarkable number of national-class talents in their formative years.
A partial list of HSPVA alumni who have gone on to make their mark in the jazz world would include drummers Joel Fulgham, Herman Matthews and Sebastian Whittaker; bassists Chris Walker, David Craig and Keith Vivens; and saxophonists Shelley Carrol, Everette Harp and Warren Sneed.
On the afternoon of April 26, HSPVA will host a reception for alumni, faculty, parents of alumni and former faculty in recognition of the school's accomplishments over the past quarter-century.

The HSPVA composition club was founded to promote musical composition by its members and the performance of those compositions for the public.
The composition club at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA) is the brainchild of a small group of musicians/composers who wanted to further their arts by the formation of a group of likeminded individuals capable of helping each other in their creative endeavors.

On November 10 and 11, HSPVA will be recognized at ceremonies in Washington, D.C. The school will receive a plaque and a flag signifying its Blue Ribbon status.While the Blue Ribbon Award reflects outstanding academics at the school, HSPVA's arts curriculum is well known throughout the international arts community.
HSPVA's music department graduates are frequently accepted by such distinguished institutions as the Juilliard School, the Eastman School of Music, the Peabody Conservatory, Northwestern University, the New England Conservatory of Music, and the University of Southern California.
Former HSPVA students can be found on Broadway, in dance and theater companies around the world, in major orchestras and ensembles, and exhibiting their works in prestigious galleries.

The evening was billed as a tribute to HSPVA jazz, and the program featured the famed performing arts school's current student all-stars, followed by a quartet featuring current faculty and distinguished alums.
Led by saxophonist Warren Sneed, an HSPVA alum and current head of the program, and featuring grads Sebastian Whittaker on drums, David Craig on upright bass, and teacher Bob Henschen on piano, the quartet tore through a number of standards and original compositions.
Back in the HSPVA jazz room, Moran sat at the piano the piano and led the way as students joined him on bass, drums, guitar, and sax.

HSPVA alumni Andre Hayward was the winner of the 2003 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trombone Competition held in Washington, D.C. He is a recipient of a $20,000.00 scholarship.

On Monday Robin received the letter from HSPVA that she was accepted for the coming school year, however it would be June before it would be known if there were any out of district spots available.
It was just a few days later that Robin’s mom visited with HSPVA and arrangements were made for the coming year.
The next Friday night the 10th, Robin skipped the Conroe Gospel Show because the Vocal department of HSPVA was having their year end show and she was invited to watch.

Our last visit was the High School For The Performing and Visual Arts (HSPVA), training some of Houston’s (and the country’s) most talented young men and women.
HSPVA pioneered the now nationally familiar magnet school concept and gained recognition for Houston as the first major American city to peacefully integrate an inner city high school.
In 2001, two HSPVA graduating seniors, Catherine Lees and Wayne Wilson were presented Presidential Scholars in the Arts medallions in special ceremonies at historic Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C.

The entertainment was coordinated by Bob Morgan, head of the HSPVA jazz department and a Musicfest board member.
The lively action was in the Annex of Gremillion and Co. and spilled over into the main exhibit gallery where the work of professional artist Elizabeth Chandler was being featured at a soiree hosted by gallery owners Ron and Kimberly Gremillion.
Ron Stone, a Musicfest advisory board member, served as honorary chair for the evening, which raised funds for college scholarships for HSPVA graduates.

 Presidential Scholars
She was on HSPVA Student Parliament, was in Who's Who Among American High School Students, received the HSPVA Outstanding Artist Award.
Recently she was featured in a TV special on the Houston High School for Performing and Visual Arts and named a finalist for the Donna Reed Scholarship.
His sculptures have been exhibited at HSPVA, the Wedge International Tower in Houston, Pratt Institute and Sophora, in New York, and are currently showing at the Alley Theatre.

Much to my delight, I learned early this week that Tim Hagans was going to be in town in conjunction with the HSPVA spring jazz festival.
It's been a fairly busy work week for me, but I lucked out in that I was able to attend the performance on Friday night and the clinic, Saturday at 11:00 AM.
It was divided into two parts, the first half featuring the HSPVA combo and the second half featured the first jazz ensemble.

One thing I didn’t like right off the bat was the building had NO windows, which was almost forgotten when I walked inside and saw the unique design of checkered floors and red walls, Broadway lights, and student art almost everywhere possible.
The voice students were singing, the other music students were literally playing their instruments in the halls, the theater arts students were practicing their lines, and the art students just looked clueless!
I am so happy that I came to the conclusion that SAA is the high school for me and hope that my friends will be with me in high school.

Music is a very important facet of my life and I thought that HSPVA would tickle my fancy.
Agnes is a Catholic high school with every club I could possibly imagine, and I absolutely loved the uniform code (I know that sounds weird but any high school uniform code is better than my school’s).
