Hubble Space Telescope (HST) - MSN Encarta
The primary mirror of the HST has a diameter of 94.5 in (240 cm), and the optics of the telescope are designed so that, theoretically, when making a visible-light observation, the telescope can resolve astronomical objects that are at an angular distance of 0.05 arcsecond apart (see Angle).
After the HST was launched, scientists discovered that its primary mirror had a systematic aberration, the result of a manufacturing error.
Now that the HST has the resolving power it was designed to have, it is capable of performing research such as that necessary to significantly improve the calculation of the rate at which galaxies are receding from the Milky Way as a function of their distances.

Hypertrophy-Specific Training : : Official Home of HST
As hypertrophy-specific research progressed in specificity it was clear that traditional training routines had stumbled across many important principles of load induced muscle hypertrophy, but because of their limited perspective (volume and intensity) they failed to capitalize on some critical truths exposed by research at the cellular level.
The whole point of the HST book is not to discuss HST, but to present the body of research explaining how hypertrophy occurs.
In order for the loading to result in significant hypertrophy, the stimulus must be applied with sufficient frequency to create a new "environment", as opposed to seemingly random and acute assaults on the mechanical integrity of the tissue.

FEP Teflon & Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Abstracts
FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene) used on the Hubble Space telescope (HST) on the outer surface of the multi-layer insulation (MLI) blankets and on radiator surfaces.
Because the HST FEP appears more damaged than the LDEF FEP based on the depth of embrittlement, other causes for FEP embrittlement in addition to the atomic oxygen and ultraviolet (UV) radiation, such as thermal effects and the possible role of soft x-ray radiation, need to be considered.
FEP led the investigative team to theorize that the HST damage was caused by thermal cycling with deep-layer damage from electron and proton radiation which allowed the propagation of cracks along stress concentrations, and that the damage increased with the combined total dose of electrons, protons, ultraviolet and x-ray radiation along with thermal cycling.

Because the HST must be stable and safe for shuttle retrieval, this option must be executed while the HST is functional and possesses sufficient redundancy in key systems to ensure it remains so during mission execution - e.g.
Although no official policy has been promulgated to the HST Program by NASA Headquarters, informally it is expected that the retrieval and return to Earth of the HST by Shuttle astronauts will be judged of insufficient value in relation to the risks to crew and shuttle vehicle, and that other EOM options must be identified.
Even if HST had spent considerable time in gravity gradient mode prior to the installation mission, and had become very cold and structurally unsound, this would not be a safety issue as it is in the case of shuttle retrieval and return to earth.

Hubble Space Telescope - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) is a telescope in orbit around the Earth, named after astronomer Edwin Hubble for his discovery of galaxies outside the Milky Way and his creation of Hubble's Law, which calculates the rate at which the universe is expanding.
The HST is part of NASA's Great Observatories series, with the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, the Chandra X-ray Observatory, and the Spitzer Space Telescope.
A study on the relative impacts on astronomy of different sizes of telescopes found that while papers based on HST data generate 15 times as many citations as a 4 m ground-based telescope such as the William Herschel Telescope, the HST cost about 100 times as much to build and maintain.

It's almost too painful to recount - the announcement of significant spherical aberration in the primary mirror, and the realization that some kinds of anticipated HST science (quasar host galaxies, for example) simply could not be done in that condition.
We continued this work in the third cycle of HST programs, now using the parallel imaging and spectroscopic capabilities of the observatory to seek evidence of how radio galaxies evolve with cosmic time.
We got several fields' worth of parallel data in the same filters, obtained while some other program was doing long spectroscopic exposures since we didn't care just what pieces of sky were searched, and found a few such compact blue emission-line galaxies (but never as many as in the 53W002 field).
