Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is a polymer of butadiene terminated at each end with a hydroxyl functional group.
It is used to react with a diisocyanate to form a polyurethane, a stable and easily stored synthetic rubber, often used in tire manufacturing.
HTPB is thus a generic name for a class of compounds.

Solid fuel ramjet composition - Patent 5320692
Though the performance of presently available standard solid fuel for ramjets containing HTPB is considered adequate, it is highly desirable to have ramjet solid fuel compositions of increased performance, as the range of missiles would be significantly increased and they could be deployed for tactical air launched missiles.
HTPB and DDI are mixed in the ratio of 78-22 by weight percent to form a composite and various additives singly or a mixture thereof are then added to the composite in a weight percent ratio corresponding to the weight of HTPB.
Thus HTPB fuel could be loaded with weight percentages of Al, Mg, and B.sub.4 C corresponding to the weight of HTPB, in quantities of up to 30 percent Al, up to 20 percent Mg and up to 50 percent B.sub.4 C in relation to HTPB.

CSM: Annual Conference - View 2005 Conference Abstract
Legionella pneumophila is an intracellular bacterial pathogen of alveolar macrophages that causes the atypical pneumonia known as Legionnaires’ Disease.
HtpB plays a role in virulence since it: i) mediates invasion into HeLa cells, ii) is abundantly produced and secreted by intracellular L.
htpB was cloned into a tetracycline/doxycycline regulated expression vector, pTRE2hyg, and stably transfected into CHO-AA8 cells (Chinese hamster ovary cells expressing a tetracycline controlled transactivator).

One drawback of such an insoluble binder is that it does not allow for the reclamation of the energetic ingredients and hardware after the shelf life of the propellant or explosive has expired.
The HFPB polymers of the present invention maintain all of the preferred properties of standard HTPB binders and are compatible with common energetic plasticizers.
Gumstocks were prepared from polymers 1/81, 1/85, 1/86, and from the standard HTPB polymer R45M, using the common binder ingredients shown in Table 1.

The GAPMI obtained is used for the cross-linking or grafting reactions with HTPB at an elevated temperature in the second step.
The cross-linked co-polymers are isolated from the crude reaction mixture by fractional precipitation technique using chloroform as solvent and methanol as non-solvent.
The co-polymer exhibited two glass transition temperatures for HTPB-GAP co-polymer, at –74.03°C and –35.84°C. During the thermal analysis, the cross-linked co-polymers exhibited two exothermic peaks and one endothermic peak, indicating the presence of HTPB and GAP polymeric chain segments in the co-polymers.

 Chinese sold Iraq 'dual-use' chemical
The chemical transferred to Iraq was a transparent liquid rubber called hydroxy terminated polybutadiene, or HTPB, that is used in making solid fuel for long-range missiles, said U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity.
Although used mainly for making solid fuel for missiles, HTPB also is used for commerical purposes, such as for space launches.
The chemical HTPB is listed as a controlled export on a list of missile-related goods made public by the Chinese government in August — about the same time that the HTPB transfer to Iraq was made.

William Safire, minister of disinformation - Salon
HTPB is used as a "binder" for solid rocket propellants.
His charge is based on quotes from an exchange of e-mails, leaked to Safire from "an Arab source." The most damning message was sent Sept. 4, 2002.
By acting only as a go-between, strictly speaking, he would not be breaking any French or European export regulations, if the HTPB were not exported from France.

Projects - Cal Poly Space Systems - Cal Poly
The HTPB test started well, and the motor "choked", but a problem with our injector angle cause the casing to burn through near the top and the motor stopped sooner than expected.
This is not as easy as it sounds—it took us a few tries to get just the right ratio of diisocyanate and HTPB and the right curing temperature before we got a nice, clear fuel grain.
This test fire was primarily to see if the HTPB fuel would burn safely and also served to practice new motor firing safety procedures.

Historic rocket powered by rubber fuel - Space.com - MSNBC.com
SpaceShipOne burns a material called hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene, or HTPB — a common ingredient in tire rubber — as fuel, with nitrous oxide serving as the oxidizer.
The HTPB fuel developed by SpaceDev is nonvolatile, making it easier and safer to store than other materials.
Its byproducts — water vapor, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen — are preferable to the waste produced by the shuttle's solid rocket boosters, which burn ammonium perchlorate and aluminum.

Methods and compositions for bonding propellants within rocket motors - Patent 5273785
The present invention is particularly adaptable for use with hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene-type (HTPB) propellants.
More particularly, the present invention is related to the binding of hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene-type (HTPB) propellants to insulation layers by the use of a reactive intermediate material, such as isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI), which material reacts with both the HTPB propellant and the insulation layer.
The reactive material is chosen such that it is capable of reacting with both the insulation material and the propellant, forming strong chemical bonds with both materials.

C'mon, i know there's plenty of people outthere that have been thinking about high SI fuels and going radio-thermal and or fission based ion propulsion.
These values are much higher than the solid rockets used for the shuttle.

Here we present a simple one-step compatibilisation strategy for blends of polyamide 12 (PA 12) and hydroxytelechelic polybutadiene (HTPB).
A difunctionnal reagent, either a dianhydride or a diisocyanate is added during melt blending of the two polymers, that is likely to react with both the end-chain amine functions of PA 12 and the hydroxyl functions of HTPB, thus leading to the in situ formation of a PA 12-HTPB compatibilising copolymer.
PA 12 / HTPB, PA 12 / HTPB / APy and PA 12 / HTPB / H12MDI blends were prepared in an internal mixer at 200°C. [full text]

In August Iraq purchased from a Chinese company a dual-use chemical used in producing missile fuel, with the aid of French and Syrian brokers, according to U.S. intelligence and defense officials.
The sale of the chemical, hydroxy terminated polybutadiene (HTPB), was traced last summer from China’s Qilu Chemicals company, U.S. officials said.
The French company CIS Paris brokered the sale of 20 tons of HTPB to Iraq, according to the Washington Times.
