The Republic of Maldives is an island nation consisting of the Maldive group of atolls and the Suvadive group of atolls in the Indian Ocean, south of Laccadive group of islands of India, about 700 kilometers south-west of Sri Lanka.
The smallest atoll is Meemu Atoll with only one island (the largest island in Maldives).
The administrative head of each island is the Island Chief (Katheeb), appointed by the Ministry of Atolls Administration.
