She claimed he was the illegitimate son of Håkon III of Norway, the leader of the birkebeiner faction in the ongoing civil war against the bagler.
Håkon was born in territory which was controlled by the bagler faction, and his mother's claim that he was a birkebeiner royal son placed them both in a very dangerous position.
In 1263 a dispute with the Scottish king concerning the Hebrides, a Norwegian possession, induced Haakon to undertake an expedition to the west of Scotland.

Haakon Sverresson was not married, but he is claimed to have sired a son to Inga of Varteig.
In Summer 1218, Inga underwent a trial by ordeal (bore iron) in Bergen to show the paternity of her son.

Norway, comprising the smaller division of the Scandinavian peninsula, is bounded on the east by Lapland and Sweden, and on the west by the Atlantic.
As regards territorial development in the Middle Ages, Norway had a number of tributary provinces--in the north, Finmark, inhabited by heathen Lapps; various groups of islands south-west of Norway as: the Farve Islands, the Orkneys, the Shetlands, and the Isle of Man in the Irish Sea, to which were added later Iceland and Greenland.
Ecclesiastically, Norway was at first under the direction of the Archbishop of Lund (1103); later (1152) under the Archbishop of Trondhjem, who had jurisdiction over the Bishops of Bergen, Stavanger, Oslo, Hamar, Farvê, Kirkwall (Orkney Islands), Skalholt and Holar (Holum) in Iceland, and Gardar (Garde) in Greenland.

Luck made Sweden get Norway on its side and there was a few thousand troops sent to Swedens aid in that battle.
If Norway had been ruled by the Magnus Erlingsson or his descendants instead of Sverres descendant Håkon III, Norway would have sent a few thousand troops to the support of Denmark.
