Haakonsvern is the main base of the Royal Norwegian Navy and the largest naval base in the Nordic area.
The base is located at Mathopen within Bergen municipality, ca 15 km southwest of the centre of the City of Bergen.
Haakonsvern contains the Royal Norwegian Naval Training Establishment (KNM Tordenskjold) as well as repair and maintenance facilities (including an underground dock facility with capacity to take frigates).

The satellite photograph published in the Russian weekly newspaper Versiya's Oct. 31 edition shows a submarine at the Haakonsvern Naval Base, near the west coast city of Bergen.
The Russian newspaper said the photograph appeared to show repairs being made to the USS Memphis shortly after the Kursk accident.

For many years, AOF has worked closely with the Adult Education department at the Haakonsvern naval base in Bergen.
The base has about 2,500 personnel in national service at all times, as well as officers and civilian employees.
