Haast Pass (1,842 ft) is the first low pass in the Main Divide of the Southern Alps south of Mt. Cook, over 50 miles to the north.
Although the pass had long been known to the Maoris and was the route used by the war party of Te Puoho, it was not until 1861 that it was reached by a European, J. Baker, a surveyor.
The belt of schists crossing the pass is generally finer-grained and softer than the general average and this may have been a determining factor in establishing the pre-glacial drainage and the location of the pass.

The road up through Haast Pass was very gentle compared to what we had experienced previously on the Crown Ridge road near Cardrona.
The river flowing down towards Haast passed through this area called the Gates of Haast, though we're not exactly sure where the gates were.
There is an enormous bridge that spans the Haast river, of course single lane, but with two passing bays, where you can pull over to allow oncoming traffic to pass.

As it turns out we were wrong, the Kea is a pretty blue/green parrot, this bird which reminded me of the solid-bodied guinea fowl, though the neck and head are not slender, is a Weka (thankyou Shirly P of NZ for this info, much appreciated).
Overall the drive was fairly straightforward and uneventful, although I was fascinated by the stand of silver trees blowing in the breeze.

The descent, though, was much more dramatic on the west side of the pass, with the landscape quickly changing from alpine meadows and forest to denser, tropical foliage -- ferns, palm-type plants, heavy leafy undergrowth, wiry and twisted trees, trunks covered in lush, green growth.

Trivia: Chatted with a local (Auckland) in Haast and he said (true or false, anyone?)...there are only three places on earth with consistent geo-thermal activity -- Yellowstone (in the US), Iceland, and Rotorua (New Zealand).
