  Musical Atlas of Cuba
The musical descendant of the contradanza, the habanera or contradanza habanera (Havana-style contradanza), the habanera's distinguishing musical feature is its short, repeating 2/4 rhythmic figure in the bass line:
In 1890, Eduardo Sanchez de Fuentes' habanera "Tu" became so popular, both within and outside of Cuba, that it epitomized the form.
According to preeminent Cuban music historian Alejo Carpentier, the habanera was never called such by the people of Havana (for them it was just the local style of contradanza).

On this debut CD she sings lots of favorites and a few surprises (the Maid of Orleans aria is a nice treat; "O mon Fernand" in the original French is most welcome).
There are moments when you wish that her sound were darker and more contralto-ish, as in Sapho's aria (which also suffers from the occasional lapse in pitch) and Romeo's opening scene from Capuleti, but the shining top makes up for that lack.
Kitic also seems to miss the point as Dalila, Mignon's aria passes by unnoticed, and she doesn't seem to be totally comfortable with either French or Italian, although the former is better.

It is interesting that while Charlotte is classified as a classical crossover artist, I always felt that she played the arias relatively straight - simply allowing her more youthful sound to create the crossover appeal.
This arrangement of "Habanera" however, is half aria and half latino dance track, and if anything is even bolder than the similar things recorded by Brightman or Watson It represents a bold move by Charlotte, and the first true operatic crossover that she has performed.

During her entrance number, the "Habanera," Carmen must establish character through gestures while at the same time singing an aria which, in its unmistakable quality as cabaret performance, refuses access to that character.
Once past the "Habanera," her acting found greater conviction, though she seemed less comfortable with flamenco poses and broad gestures evocative of the brothel than with the resigned fatalism of the 3rd and 4th acts.
