Habitat heads home   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Terence Conran's first Habitat store opened on London's Fulham Road in 1964 and for Conran, a young furniture designer and restaurateur at the time, it was out with the dark, heavy furniture of his parents' generation and in with something altogether cooler.
Many of Habitat's stores did not do the iconic image justice nor Conran's original mission to "seduce young moderns with lively tastes." In 1992, Habitat was bought by the Kamprad family and in 1998, furniture designer Tom Dixon was made head of design.
Habitat also retained one of the United Kingdom's last in-situ Wurlitzers—in 1925 it was the first cinema in the West End to be equipped with one and was where Queen Victoria saw her first film.
