NASA Tech Briefs: Advanced rigid/inflatable spacecraft habitation module
Modules like this one have potential for commercial applications, including the provision of human habitats for the commercialization of outer space and for shelter against such hostile environments as frigid polar regions, high altitude (airborne or on mountains), and underwater.
The module is a hybrid of an inflatable shell with a hard central structural core - an advanced structure that exploits the packaging and mass efficiencies of its inflatable structure, and the advantage of preintegration afforded by a hard-- structured habitat.
As the advanced rigid/inflatable hybrid module has been described thus far, it can readily be seen to offer advantages, over older modules, of lighter weight, larger volume, greater ease of fabrication, and associated lower cost; these advantages are expected to ensure the leading role of modules like this one in long-duration spaceflight.

 Mir close calls
Sometime later, as planned, the Soyuz jettisoned its habitation module in preparation for the deorbiting maneuver.
The Soviet designers learned from the lesson: never again the habitation module, with all its vital systems, would be separated from the Soyuz until deorbiting maneuver had been successfully completed.
Thanks to the module's ingenious design, the crew was able to unpressurize the middle compartment of the Kvant-2 and used it as an airlock to return into the station.

Transhab Module - NASA's Johnson Space Center proposed a much larger and lighter inflatable 8-meter diameter"Transhab" module that also could be converted into crew quarters for future manned missions to the Moon and Mars.
It was also possible that the module could be built and paid for by private industry and leased to NASA, although the exact configuration wasn't clear.
Transhab and the 8.2-meter module appeared to be equally expensive ($100 million in 1998) and NASA had not made a final decision.

 Artemis Project: Initial Habitat Orientation
The Reference Mission calls for a vertical landing of the stack, consisting of the integrated ascent/descent stage and the habitation module, with the two lined up vertically.
The obvious thought when trying to trim unnecessary structural mass from the stack is to forego the added strcture and lowering mechanisms and land the habitation module in a horizontal fashion, eliminating the need to move it from an original vertical state.
The jacks to level the module after landing would have to be stronger and need more gearing to lift the full weight of the module vs the lower weight of the bracing

At NASA's Habitation Module Commercialization Conference this summer, the space agency floated the possibility that one or more commercial partners would own and maintain the crew habitation module-essentially the living quarters-on the space station.
Construction of the space station is scheduled to begin next year, and work on the module is over budget and behind schedule.
Part of the problem with the living quarters is that NASA wants to replace a proposed aluminum cylinder with an inflatable module that has three times the volume.
