 Habsburg, House of
Habsburg, House of, also spelled Hapsburg, also called House of Austria, royal German family, one of the principal sovereign dynasties of Europe from the 15th to the 20th century.
Habsburgs ruled Hungary and Bohemia from 1526 and retained control over them until 1918; Habsburgs also ruled Spain and the Spanish Empire for almost two centuries (1504-06, 1516-1700).
The name Habsburg is derived from the castle of Habsburg, or Habichtsburg ("Hawk's Castle"), built in 1020 by Werner, bishop of Strasbourg, and his brother-in-law, Count Radbot, in the Aargau overlooking the Aar River, in what is now Switzerland.

The Austrian Order of the Golden Fleece
The Habsburg Order, therefore, may be regarded as permanently united with the Headship of the Dynasty, just as the Spanish was united with the Crown (when held by Burgundian dynasts).
The Habsburgs would probably have abandoned their claim to Sovereignty of the Order of the Golden Fleece after the Treaty of Utrecht if they had not found themselves in possession of the Treasure of the Order, which had been retained in Brussels.
While the Habsburg Order has followed the original statutes in maintaining its historic character, it is nonetheless a Dynastic Order of the House of Habsburg-Austria.

Hohenzollern and Habsburg - Humanities - Huron High School
The name is derived from the family castle of Habsburg, or Habichtsburg ("Hawk's Castle"), built in 1020 on the Aare River in what is now the Swiss canton of Aargau by Bishop Werner of Strasbourg.
In 1282 he invested his successors with these duchies, which became the hereditary lands and center of the Habsburg domains, identified with Austria, which they ruled without interruption until 1918 as dukes, archdukes, and emperors.
The actual origin of the family is obscure, but Guntram the Rich, who lived about A.D. and may have been a Carolingian noble, is considered the earliest traceable ancestor of the Habsburg house.

 Guelph's Catholic Hill
The top contender is the House of Habsburg-Lorraine, by virtue of the 1736 marriage of Maria Theresa von Habsburg and Francis, Duke of Lorraine: great great grandparents of young Maximilian who in 1863 began the huge church in Guelph.
If Maximilian von Habsburg did have a grand Masonic design involving Guelph as headquarters of a Peaceable Kingdom in the New World, the popular and controversial 1981 French history Holy Blood, Holy Grail has a thesis to explain it.
If the Holy blood, Holy Grail thesis is correct, Maximilian von Habsburg may well have had in mind for Guelph some grand Masonic scheme.

 Encyclopedia: Royal House
I believe the name of the ruling house of Austria was Habsburg-Lotharingen (or Habsburg-Lorraine in English) for the descendants of Francis of Lorraine and Maria Theresia of Austria, as House names are usually changed when the succession is through a female - but as a surname, it's just plain von Hapsburg/Habsburg.
This is a case where the House name as usually given (just plain Habsburg) isn't technically correct, like the "House of Romanov" -- Someone else 23:53 Jan 22, 2003 (UTC) Toying with these here before adding to article, as much has to be worked out and it is "neater" if it's done here.
It turned out he was a bastard of the Habsburgs and was born with the surname Edler von Kirsch.

Ancestors and Family of Leopold II Habsburg-Lotharingen
Although he dismantled some of the centralized state machinery that Joseph had set up in the Habsburg domains, he kept in force Joseph's decrees that emancipated the peasantry and granted increased religious liberty to non-Catholics.
The third son of the Habsburg Maria Theresa and the emperor Francis I, Leopold succeeded his father as duke of Tuscany when his eldest brother became emperor as Joseph II in 1765.
Like Joseph, Leopold was influenced by the ideas of the Enlightenment and was determined to construct an efficient state apparatus at the expense of feudal interests.

Another group holds the opinion that Otto von Habsburg’s interventions were not very significant and did more damage to Austria than they helped the country, “Otto Habsburg’s efforts mainly served the purpose to restore the monarchy and to re-establish pre-World War One conditions” (11).

 HABSBURG-[ruv.net : Online Encyclopedia Britannica : 1911 Edition]-
HABSBURG, or }IAPSBIJRG, the name of the famous family from which have sprung the dukes and archdukes of Austria from 1282, kings of Hungary and Bohemia from 1526, and emperors of Austria from 1804.
Restored to the Habsburgs in the person of Ferdinand in 1814, it remained under his rule, and then under that of his son Leopold (1797-1870), i.intil the rising of 1859, when the Austrians were driven out and the grand-duchy was added to the kingdom of Sardinia.
Yet, in spite of internal dissensions arising out of questions fundamentally insoluble, and in spite of the constant threat of external complications that may lead to war, the Habsburg monarchy as the result of the changes in the f9th and 20th centuries is seemingly stronger than ever.

The Lorraine collections - Institute and Museum of the History of Science
Grand Duke Peter Leopold Habsburg-Lorraine (1747-1792) appointed as director of the museum Abbot Felice Fontana, who built an observatory and upgraded the collection with new instruments of mathematics, physics, meteorology and electricity, many of which were constructed in the Museum workshops.
The Istituto e Museo di Storia della Scienza is heir to a tradition of five centuries of scientific collecting, which has its origins in the central importance assigned to scientists and scientific instruments by the Medici and Lorraine families.
After their decline during the French occupation (1799-1814), the museum and its workshops were reorganized upon the return to power of the Lorraine Family.

The Austrian Order of the Golden Fleece
On his death in 1765, the Sovereignty of the Order passed to the first Prince of the new house of Habsburg-Lothringen (Habsburg-Lorraine), the Archduke Joseph, who had been elected King of the Romans in 1764 and became Emperor immediately upon his father's death.
The Emperor Charles made seven awards of the Order between his departure into exile and his death in 1922 but the Order was not awarded again until the Emperor's son and heir, the Archduke Otto, attained his majority in 1930.
While the Habsburg Order has followed the original statutes in maintaining its historic character, it is nonetheless a Dynastic Order of the House of Habsburg-Austria.

Habsburg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
However, the heiress of the last Austrian Habsburg (Maria Theresa) had married Francis Stephan, Duke of Lorraine, (both of them were great-grandchildren of Habsburg Emperor Ferdinand III, but from different empresses) and their descendants carried on the Habsburg tradition from Vienna under the dynastic name Habsburg-Lorraine.
Maria Theresa of Austria, Habsburg heiress and wife of emperor Francis I Stephen, reigned as Archduchess of Austria and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia 1740- 1780.
The kingship of Hungary remained in the Habsburg family for centuries; but as the kingship was not strictly inherited (Hungary was an elective monarchy till 1687) and was sometimes used as a training ground for young Habsburgs, the dates of rule do not always match those of the primary Habsburg possessions.

In 1752 Charles Alexander of Lorraine, governor-general of the Austrian Netherlands, mentioned in a letter to his sister-in-law, the Empress Maria-Theresa, that a certain Cazier, a French-speaking official and member of the Finance Council (one of the central institutions of the Habsburgs), knew no Dutch at all originally.
The point of departure in present-day studies of linguistic usages in Brussels is the premise that it was not until the reign of the Habsburg Charles V (1515 -1555) that Brussels became the capital of the Low Countries.
During the reign of Emperor Charles V (1515-1555) Brussels became the capital of the wide-reaching Habsburg empire.
