The Habu is the name used for a number of species of poisonous snakes found in the Okinawan islands.
The habus are viewed as having migrated to Okinawa over a prehistoric land bridge connecting the island to China.
Bottles of (very expensive) "Habu wine" are widely sold in Naha, the capital of Okinawa prefecture; the habu venom present in the wine (along with a dead snake on the bottom) is reputed to increase male virility.

Habus are pit vipers, more closely related to the adder than to any species of North American snake.
There are almost a dozen species of habu; the variety native to Okinawa (Trimeresurus okinavensis) is supposedly greenish or greenish-yellow; however, all habus are extremely rare in North America (less than a dozen specimens in all zoos combined) and photographs are very hard to come by.
Crews who flew the airplane were also called Habu, and the name came to be recognized with the flbird program and even incorporated into the insignia worn by the crews on their uniforms.

There, the native Okinawans began calling the SR-71 "Habu" because it's shape and color reminded them of the dark pit viper snake.
