HACEK IE should be considered in the differential diagnosis of fever of unknown origin.
HACEK group organisms typically produce vegetations that are larger than vegetations found in IE due to other organisms.
Although embolic complications are frequent with native-valve IE due to HACEK organisms, in general, anticoagulation is believed to be contraindicated because of the risk of intracranial bleeding.

A hacek or háček ("ˇ", pronounced "'hatchek"), also known as a caron, is a diacritic placed over certain letters to indicate palatalization in the orthography of some Slavonic languages, such as Czech, and the Baltic languages.
"Hacek" is suggested in spellcheckers for the following: Haca, hace, hacer, hacket, Haeck, Hajek, Hasek, Hashika, havce, havek, Hiace, hicke, Hmcic, Holcik, Hucke, Macek.

 No. 99-2413
Keith Hacek testified that he had worked for Urban Artifacts in the first calendar year of 1997 and had been paid "a couple thousand [or] a thousand" dollars.
Hacek's testimony, while somewhat inconsistent, was not so speculative that LIRC could not rely on it.
By taking selected portions of Hacek's testimony, minimizing the total amount he was paid and maximizing the amount that may have compensated him for goods, Urban Artifacts calculates that it only paid $400 to Hacek for services performed during the quarter.

The use of the caron (and the acute accent) for Latin characters was introduced into the Czech language in the 15th century by Jan Hus in his De Ortographia Bohemica (1412).
The caron is used in Americanist phonetic notation as a diacritic hacek organisms to indicate various types of pronunciation.
hacek However, as Finnish uses neither sound, and neither keyboards nor the ubiquitous ISO_8859-1 codepage support these characters, this recommendation is rarely followed.

Since the hacek is a diacritic, it was avoided, and so the long-s and yogh symbols were pressed into service.
This explanation of the IPA avoidance of the hacek series is pretty weak, in my opinion, on several counts.
Until 2 weeks ago, it had never occurred to me. I thought that the hacek was a part of the base character (much as the hooks of the IPA retroflex series, angma, etc., are a part of the base character).

Although infective endocarditis due to HACEK group of bacteria (Haemophilus spp., Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, Cardiobacterium hominis, Eikenella corrodens and Kingella spp.) is a rare occurrence, the identification of the organisms is still important diagnostically for the specific therapy.
The HACEK bacteria are classified as fastidious Gram-negative coccobacilli, and the biochemical characteristics resemble each other.
The RFLP patterns of five species of HACEK bacteria obtained by combing use of HinfI and MspI digestion were readily distinguished from each other and from other pathogens of infective endocarditis including viridans streptococci.

"Hacek" is the diminutive of the Czech word "hak", meaning hook.
One of my Czech pedagogical grammars claims haceks were appearing in Czech manuscripts in the late 13th century, while another explains that the language's diacritical conventions stabilized around the end of the 16th century, and that publications of the church of the Czech Brethren used haceks rather than Hus's dots.
Any of those who introduced the hacek could, in my uneducated opinion, have seen haceks in Hebrew manuscripts like those described in Alice Faber's recent posting, but we don't know that.

It is worth noting that the actual word translated here as cedar is ash wood or [symbol: apostrophe s- hacek] wood in the texts; there is less than total agreement among Egyptologists that the word does indeed mean "cedar." Meru may mean cypress or juniper.
One school of thought proposes that the Egyptians did not make a distinction between cedar and juniper, and that ash refers to better-quality conifers and meru refers to some kind of second-quality timber.
