 Background Info - Bodhisattva Hachiman
The identification of Hachiman with Emperor Ojin is thought to have developed during the Nara (710-794) and Heian (794-85) periods.
Later, Hachiman became the object of veneration favored by the warrior class, and Minamoto no Yoritomo, founder of the Kamakura shogunate, established a shrine to him in Kamakura.
Hachiman, the Daishonin says, once vowed to reside "on the heads of honest persons." The fact that he has abandoned his shrine and ascended to the heavens can only mean that there are no longer any honest persons in the country; all have abandoned the "honest doctrine" of the Lotus Sutra.

Of course, Hachiman's cities were badly damaged and hundreds of millions of subjects would die in the poorly supplied refugee camps, but Hachiman was a model of post-War reconstruction and the spirit of the Combine's people.
Because Hachiman lost communication with the rest of the Draconis Combine and because no jumpships appeared to re-establish even courier-style communications, the nobility of Hachiman decided that they were the only organized survivors of the Combine.

Hachiman was originally Ojin, a semi-legendary emperor and invader of Korea, who lived sometime between the 3rd and 5th centuries and was deified after death.
