Gifu Prefecture consists of the old provinces of Hida and Mino.
The towns and villages that merged were Hachiman, Meihou, Minami, Shitori, Takasu, Wara, and Yamato.
Gifu's economy includes many traditional industries such as agriculture and woodworking, but it is dominated by manufacturing industries extending from the Nagoya area, such as aerospace and automotive industry.

Gujo Hachiman is a small town in central Gifu prefecture, at the confluent of the upper Nagara-gawa river and Yoshida-gawa river.
The town is famous for its castle, originally built in 1559 and reconstructed in 1933, and for its Gujo Odori Folk Dances, held each summer from early July to early September, with the main festival takeing place between 13 and 16 August.
Gujo Hachiman is about 2 hours 15 minutes from Nagoya (¥2,310).

Please note that it is not possible to use a JR Rail Pass to travel to Gujo Hachiman.
Buses depart each half hour from the Gifu Bus Centre, which is next door to the Gifu Meitetsu Train Station.
In Mino Ota transfer to the Nagaragawa Railway (not associated with JR) for the trip to Gujo Hachiman Station.
