On February 20, 2006 the cities of Esashi and Mizusawa and the municipaltites of Maesawa, Isawa and Koromogawa from Isawa District merged to form the new city of Ōshū.

The city was founded on September 1, 2005 from the merger of the towns of Ashiro and Nishine and the village of Matsuo, all from Iwate District.
Hachimantai is the continuation of a mountain ridge that contains Shimokura, and ahead of the ridge that Appi is on.
Hachimantai ridge is also well known to hikers for its view, to leaf-peepers in the fall for the foliage, and to fans of the onsen for its hot springs.

Hachimantai Ridge is the mountainous ridge coming off of the prefectures famous and active volcano Mt. Iwate, that separates Iwate and Akita prefectures.
It is not so much the ski area(s) at Hachimantai that are the charm of it as the fact that a lot of the ridge can be, and is, used as a playground for your favorite snow endeavor.
Hachimantai Ski Area was the only place offering skiing in Iwate at the beginning of the season in late November-early December, when that precedent-setting ski season looked like it might last all of about five weeks, thanks to a lack of any appreciable early season snow.

Hachimantai Forest is the best resort I've visited in Northern Japan.
Well, after 3 seasons in Japan I finally made it to a couple of the Tohoku resorts and have to say I was somewhat dissapointed.
The three lifts are near ancient....including the solo seat at the lower portion....but this is what gondola riding APPI loving keeps the crowds out (thankgod!)....they wouldn't know what to do with all the POW POW to be found.

I learned that Iwate is one of the worlds leading producers of sea urchin...now don`t get me wrong...as I love most types of sushi, and did long before I came to Japan, but if you make me eat that..
Iwate San has not erupted since the nineteen twenties, and has been showing increasing signs of "geologic activity"(that is an erudite way of saying "She is gonna BLOW HER TOP one of these days!"..or decades).
As a skier in Iwate, with at least a slight sense of adventure, I must it admit that thought has crossed my mind to ski it, at least a few times.

Hachimantai is a rather small ski-jou, but the best thing it has going for it is that it is usually the first to open and last to close in the north (this year however, Moriyoshi was the first to open).
At Hachimantai the best way to have fun is to go off the run and explore a bit on the way down.
There are very few areas which are fenced off, and the runs are more open plan than the tree lined lanes at APPI or Shizukuishi, there is usually a lot more ungroomed snow than at these two resorts as well.

Two hours south of Misawa near Morioka are a number of popular resorts.
Hachimantai, Higashi-Hachi mantai, Appi, Amihari and Shizu-kuishi are but a few of the more popular ski areas easily reached by the Tohoku Expressway.
Figure a good two to three hours of driving each way, depending on weather, to reach these resorts in Iwate Prefecture south of Misawa.

3 out of 4 members of Mt.Iwaki's tragedy was gathered!!(Ken,Peewee,and I) Nishiyama, The fourth member, was also in Hachimantai but he was lost somewhere....!?
2nd dat(16th): Tried for Hachimantai Ski area but it was closed due to strong wind.
