  Game Zombies: Review of Hacker
This game was written as a parody of that situation.
If you bought this game new -- the packaging of the game markers and consoles left a sour feeling -- the account markers were punch outs, but you have to risk the other pieces of the game by cutting them out of the printed cardboard.
However, the main complaint that anyone had afterward, besides long game length, was that by the end of the game it was difficult to keep track of all of your bonuses on each roll.

 GameSpy.com - Review
The brilliance of the game's presentation is that there is virtually no interface wall between you and the game world.
The game casts players as novice hackers in the year 2010, hired by the Uplink Corporation to take on freelance jobs breaking into computers, stealing data, altering personal information and (later in the game) becoming involved in a conspiracy that threatens to destroy the Internet.
Stop the game and it will restart from where it left off, but if the law catches up with you, your (in-game) computer is blown up and the corporation disavows your existence.

Out of Eight PC Game Reviews: Hacker Evolution Review
Uplink was a decent game but it was repetitive and not that realistic, as everything was accomplished through a GUI instead of from command line entries.
Hacker Evolution comes with a series of ten missions (including a tutorial) where you’re trying to repair the damage to the world economy reaped by some evil hackers.
The game is more difficult and frustrating than it should be, but the core gameplay is quite enjoyable and Hacker Evolution is recommended to anyone looking for a interesting and realistic puzzle game.

Uplink: Hacker Elite Review - GamersHell.com
As you start the game, you sign a contract with Uplink, which provides you with access to a gateway computer that you could use as your own and access to internal services machine, all that for a monthly maintenance fee of 300 credits.
Also while the in-game database on the various protection schemes and tools that you'll be using is very helpful, I think that some previous (even if very remote and general) knowledge of computer security would help players new to Uplink a lot.
The gameplay is really the strong point of the game, and while it might not last on your hard drive for longer than a week or two, it will still keep you hooked to your monitor until early morning for the time that it'll be there.

 Uplink - The Hacker's Shadow | Gamegrene.com
A hacker has to figure things out, probe and prod systems to find their weaknesses and exploit them, learn to cover his tracks when he's done or get traced and a free ride to jail.
Sound events in the game, the beeps and clicks of using the interface are well done and do not distract, save the beeping of the trace tracker speeding up as you are getting closer to being caught.
Also, as a (white-hat) hacker myself, I can say to you now, there are NO realistic hacking games out there other than hacking wargames so there's no reason to pan it on that basis.

Though the theft stirred considerable buzz in the gaming community, and raised fears that the release of “Half Life 2” — originally slated for September — could be delayed beyond Christmas, observers said it was not expected to have a significant impact on the company.
Pachter, the gaming analyst, said that while other game developers could try to piggy-back on the “Half Life 2” code to create bootleg versions of the game, they probably would not be able to distribute their product.

What you see on the cover gives you a clue that this game is a bit more than the typical trash we see about hackers: Here we have a guy with a leather jacket with a dinosaur pin, John Lennon shades, a Metallica shirt, and a really spiffy spiked hairdo.
As you can see, this game goes pretty far toward catching the flavor of the real scene, though some of it is necessarily stereotypical.
