USS Hackleback (SS-295), a Balao-class submarine, was a ship of the United States Navy to be named for the hackleback, a freshwater fish of the sturgeon family.
Hackleback (SS-295) was launched 30 May 1943 by the Cramp Shipbuilding Co, Philadelphia, Pa; sponsored by Mrs.
Hackleback three times came to within 13,000 yards of the Yamato force, but destroyers forced her out of range before she could get in position to fire torpedoes.

 Hackleback
During the rest of her first patrol, Hackleback made two gun attacks on small ships, but discontinued the engagements when it appeared they were trying to lure her in close to shore.
Hackleback's classification was changed to AGSS-295 on 6 November 1962.
Her name was struck from the Navy list 1 March 1967 and as of September 1967 she is being stored at Mare Island.

USS Hackleback (SS-295), a Balao-class">Balao-class submarine, was a ship of the United States Navy to be named for the hackleback, a freshwater fish of the sturgeon family.
But on this first patrol, she played a key role in the sinking of the last of Japan's super-battleships, the Yamato">Yamato.
In four successive waves, the carrier planes accounted for the destruction of Yamato, the light cruiser Yahagi">Yahagi, and two destroyers, leaving only six destroyers of the Japanese task force to escape.

Post-war records indicate that she torpedoed and sank the repair ship Odate on 27 March.
The next day, Japanese planes and ships joined in a two-hour attack on a submarine that was heard by Silversides, Sea Dog (SS-401), Hackleback (SS-295), and Threadfin (SS-410) in adjacent areas.
Threadfin was the only one of these submarines that had been attacked that day, and she reported that she heard many depth charges and several heavy explosions east of her position after the attack on her ceased.

Since she knew the position of the enemy restricted area containing mines, and had been told to keep clear of it, it is extremely doubtful that Trigger's loss was due to a mine.
On the afternoon of 28 March a two-hour long depth charge attack was conducted by Japanese planes in cooperation with ships in 32!-66'N;132-05'E. USS Silversides (SS-236), USS Hackleback (SS-295), Sea Dog and threadfin, all near the area, heard the attack.
Threadfin obtained two torpedo hits on a DE and she was depth charged by accompanying escort vessels.

On 31 March, that group was dissolved, and Threadfin received orders to join Hackleback (SS-295) and Silversides (SS-236) near Bungo Suido, the primary entrance to the Japanese Inland Sea which separates Honshu from Kyushu and Shikoku.
The submarine concluded her offensive operations near the Strait of Tsushima.
After a day of submerged patrolling without sighting a worthwhile target, she received word that night that Sea Robin (SS 407) had come upon a patrol craft heading north and four small cargomen heading south.

Shipmate Allan R. Keeler of Belleview, FL went on Eternal Patrol 8 June 2003 following a long illness.
Allan Keeler enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and made war patrols in WWII while serving in USS Trigger SS-237 and USS Hackleback SS-295.
He was discharged in 1945 as an EM2.
