The main commercial and retail centre of Hackney is known as Hackney Central to distinguish it from the rest of the borough.
To the east is the large open space of the Hackney Marshes and the districts of Hackney Wick and Homerton.

Now, we all know from recent Media exposure that Hackney is one of the worst places to live in Britain (at least in respect to living standards etc).
Now, the Council have plans to re-vigorate the whole of Hackney Playgrounds/Marshes (the bigger park with playgrounds etc that HB is based within).

This was an all-day festival that occured on the 19th of July in a field in deepest Hackney.
I picked up a friend of mine who'd come down from Brighton for the day from Victoria coach station with her baby son.
We reached the 'Marshes a little later than we'd planned (at around 4pm.), but still managed to enjoy ourselves all the same.

A senior member of the staff at Hackney reference library confirms that the origin of the proper noun "Hackney" is "Haccas Eyot" (Anglo Saxon from Old Norse)meaning "Hacca's Isle".
He also states that "Hackney" has no connection whatsoever with "hackney", which comes from the Old French word (?) for "hire horse" (not because horses were bred in Hackney).
Chambers dictionary of etymolgy says Hackney was famous for its horses and the connection is even mentioned in Piers Plowman, they sayz.

Hackney Women's Football Club (HWFC) was founded in 1986 and was the first totally women run team and the first predominantly lesbian team in London, possibly even the UK.

What had previously been low-lying marshland had been used during the war as a dump for the debris from bomb damage and in 1945 over 150 hectares were grassed over and 110 football pitches marked out.

These Hackney Marshes (not the vast areas of football pitches in East London)were once the scene of intense quarrying of Ball Clay (and still are, behind Tesco's).
Although noisy from the A380 viaduct, the marshes are a beautiful area of reeds and wildlife, with some archaeological remains.
A nice walk through Hackney Marshes and a nice area to place a cache and really quiet too found the cache straight away.T4TC.TNLN.
