Haddam offers unique opportunities for the creation of new business, given its proximity to the Connecticut River, the Valley Railroad and the excellent access to Connecticut Route 9 expressway.
It is imperative for any analysis of the opportunities for economic development in Haddam to also be sensitive to both the historic and bucolic nature of the town.
The purpose of this input is to create development plans for the two commercial centers of Haddam - the Villages of Higganum and Tylerville - and to assure that future development is compatible with the Plan of Conservation and Development.

Haddam fled Algeria in March of 1992, and on April 7, 1993 filed for political asylum in the United States.
One judge, for example, who ruled against Dr. Haddam, acknowledged that he had a “well-founded fear of persecution.” The judge asserted, however, that because Haddam is wanted by the Algerian government, he could potentially become the target of future attacks while residing in the U.S. This, she contended, could pose a threat to others.
Haddam was joined by representatives of Reps. Tom Campbell and David Bonior as well as of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, the Arab American Institute, American Muslim Council, Council on American-Islamic Relations, the Islamic Institute, Minaret Organization, and others.

 Nathan Hale Schoolhouse, East Haddam
The restored red schoolhouse, located since 1900 atop the hill in back of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, is over 200 years old and served as a school from 1750 to 1799.
In 1800 it was moved north on Main Street and located just in front of the present Nursery School building, where it remained until 1899 as a private residence for Captain Elijah Attwood and his descendants.
