HADDINGTON, EARL OF, a Scottish title bestowed in 1627 upon Thomas Hamilton, earl of Melrose (1563-1637).
Having also become kings advocate in 1596, Hamilton was entrusted with a large share in the government of his country when James went to London in 1603; in 1612 he was appointed secretary of state for Scotland, and in 1613 he was created Lord Binning and Byres.
The earls eldest son THOMAS, the 2nd earl (1600-1640), was a covenanter and a soldier, being killed by an explosion at Dunglass castle on the 30th of August 1640.

So whilst the good folk of Haddington banded together to create a common place of worship (and in so doing were able to rise considerable funds) the Sinclairs (st Clairs) of Rosslyn used their family's wealth to built a Collegiate Church for their use exclusive use.
Haddington is therefore much closer in purpose to, for example, St Giles (which served the same purpose for the people of Edinburgh) than to Rosslyn Chapel.
St Giles and Haddington were large buildings and could not possible have afforded to cover the internal structure of their churches with the same profusion of carvings as the Sinclairs did at Rosslyn Chapel.

Their brochure says "it's a test for all levels of golf." Although the golf course is an okay layout and well cared for, it is definitely not a test for a low-handicap golfer--much too easy with wide, wide fairways, flat greens, and puny rough.
Haddington is one of only 50 towns in Britain to merit the prestigious Council of British Archeology Stamp of Approval, and the Council lists 129 buildings (!) of special interest in the town.
Haddington, a favorite browsing place for us, has art galleries, the wonderful and historic St. Mary's Church (which holds excellent concerts), and a large Tesco (supermarket) tucked in just behind the high street of the town centre.
