  Haddon Hall - LoveToKnow 1911
HADDON HALL, one of the most famous ancient mansions in England.
Haddon was a manor which before the Conquest and at the time of the Domesday Survey belonged to the king, but was granted by William the Conqueror to William Peverel, whose son, another William Peverel, forfeited it for treason on the accession of Henry II.
His daughter Dorothy married John Manners, second son of the earl of Rutland, who is said to have lived for some time in the woods round Haddon Hall, disguised as a gamekeeper, until he persuaded Dorothy to elope with him.

Haddon Hall is a medieval fortified house, dating back to the 12th century when Richard de Vernon began the building.

The banqueting hall is thirty-five feet in length and twenty-five in width.
At the opposite-end of the hall is the raised dais for the lord of the hall, his family and guests, and here still stands the fine old table on which many a banquet was served.
On the walls of the hall are magnificent stags' heads and antlers and some mural oil paintings, one a portrait of Martin Middleton, another the likeness of an old and favourite huntsman and gamekeeper.

 25. Haddon Hall, Derbyshire [500x315]
The exterior walls of the earlier parts of Haddon have comparatively few windows in them, and these of small size; and as the kitchen is one of the rooms so lighted it is dark, in spite of a larger window inserted in the sixteenth century, to a degree which horrifies housewives of the present day.
Haddon hall is less of a medieval castle and more of a manor house, I’d say, but you can decide by looking at Lord Manners’ Web site and by visiting.
Cressbrook says “Haddon Hall is the finest example of a mediaeval manor house currently in existence in England” and has some pictures.

 The Haddon Hall Sheela-na-gig
According to one of the guides at Haddon Hall the sheela was found in a field nearby and is much older than the hall itself but he also admitted to not knowing that much about the sheela so we have to take that with a pinch of salt.
The hall is celebrated for it's state of preservation and parts of the building have been standing since the 12th century.
Given that Haddon Hall has been much altered over the years it seems more likely to me that this figure is a survival or perhaps a re-carving of a 12th century figure.
