Its capital is Jolo and occupies the middle group of islands of the Sulu Archipelago, between Basilan and Tawi-Tawi.
Once ruled by a Sultan, a 1703 treaty between him and the Sultan of Brunei granted the modern Malaysian region of Sabah to the Sultan of Sulu.
