The Hadramawt is a world unto itself, a cultural oasis surrounded by inhospitable terrain and loosely defined borders.
I visited the Hadramawt in February on a project for GTZ and the Plant Protection Directorate of the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources.
One gets the feeling that in a few years the Hadramawt will be one of the most developed areas in the unified Yemen.

Boxberger argues that the Hadramawt was "on the edge" of European empire.
Hadramawt was very remote and isolated from the empires of both the British and the Dutch East Indies.
There was some small change partly because of all that newfound wealth flowing into the Hadramawt from abroad, as for example in the increasing use of ankle bracelets and armloads of bangles "imitated" from India or in the increasingly sumptuous wedding parties of rich familes.

Wadi Hadramowt and walled city of Shibam
This led to the neglect of the irrigation works and of the delicate balance by which nature had been tamed, as well as the depletion of the cities and towns to the point at which the organization of urban life as it had been known could no longer be sustained.
Unfortunately, the climate of Hadramawt is inimical to the protection of manuscripts from insect attack and decay, and none, except a few fragments of the Koran, is thought to have survived from this period.
Retracing our steps a little, a well-documented benefactor of Hadramawt was the great Ziyadid Wazir of Yemen, Husain ibn Salama, who in the tenth (fourth) century constructed a string of mosques, minarets, shaded resting places for pilgrims, wells and milestones along the caravan route from Hadramawt to Mecca.

Row over Hadramawt: Middle East International, 12 Sep 1997
The unspoken agenda behind the proposal is that the government's political grip on Hadramawt is tenuous and breaking up the province might make it easier to control.
The case for a united Hadramawt is based mainly on its distinctive character and history, though the fear in Sana'a is that this could lead to demands for greater local autonomy and - ultimately - to secession.
Part of the fear stems from the fact that the failed attempt to establish a separate state in southern Yemen three years ago was led mainly by a Hadrami faction in the YSP.

Outline of the History of Ancient Southern Arabia
The earliest references to Hadramawt in Sabean inscriptions suggest that it was an ally or vassal of the mighty Sabean empire up to the 4th century B.C., when it became an independent kingdom and acquired tremendous economic significance because of its possession of Dhofar, the area in the east where the frankincense grew.
As revealed by the epigraph of Mar al-qais bin Amr, the “King of All the Arabs” who died in 328 and was buried in an-Namara, Nagran belonged to the territory dominated by Sammar since the Bedouins extended their raids as far as that area.
However, Hadramawt again freed itself from the Yemeni rulers and had to be reconquered in the second decade of the fourth century under King Yasirum Yuhanim (ja 665) and his son, Damar aliy Yuhabirr (Iry.

Even without mentioning the watercraft and navigation skills developed in Arabia, already during the middle Holocene, what emerges from a close analysis of classical sources is that at least from the 2nd century BC a south Arabia - India route already existed.
It covered a very large area and was formed by numerous tribes from almost all the coast and the highlands of south Arabia.
Also the kingdom of Hadramawt partecipated directly in sea-trade, founding two ports Qana and Sumhuram in the faraway region of the frankincense, in Dhofar Governorate.

With generous aid from the American Institute for Yemeni Studies, the second season of the Middle Hadramawt Archaeological Survey (MHAS) was undertaken in October 1999.
Typically, Stone Age sites in the Middle Hadramawt are stone alignments, cairns, and rings on the scree slopes of the wadis and their rock ledges (Figure 2).
In contrast to the Stone Age sites in the Middle Hadramawt, a whole class of which may be hidden beneath later alluviation, the range and distribution of Pre-Islamic sites is probably reasonably intact (even if, as is likely, some individual sites have been lost).

He described the city itself as stretching from west to east and "built of mud-brick whitewashed in lime in the manner of all cities of Hadramawt." The city was built into "the southern lap of the mountains" and a wall had been built at the western side.
What impressed him most was the general level of erudition which he attributed to the efforts of the mufti, Abdel-Rahman Ben Abdullah Al-Saqqaf, "to enlighten minds and disparage rigidity of thought." Testimony to these efforts existed in the two schools in the city, one for religious education, the other for public education.
Tarim, Seiyun and Ashbam were the three major cities of the area and he was struck by the level of prosperity he found.
