		The colouring principle of logwood exists in the timber in the form of a glucoside, from which it is liberated as haematoxylin by fermentation.
		By exposure to the air, especially in alkaline solutions, haematoxylin is rapidly oxidized into haematein, C16H120,, with the development of a fine purple colour.
		This reaction of haematoxylin is exceedingly rapid and delicate, rendering that body a laboratory test for alkalis.

		Confusion has sometimes arisen between haematoxylin and a crude resinous substance, known as hematoxylin, sometimes referred to as haematoxylin, which was at one time used in pharmacy and is still extensively used in the tanning industry.
		Haematoxylin as used in biology is obtained by extracting the crude product, hematoxylin, with ether, while haematein, as already indicated is an oxidation product of haematoxylin.

	Blue Histology - more about Histological Stains
		The most widely used staining technique is that of Haematoxylin and Eosin, commonly called H&E. In this method the nuclei of cells is stained by the haematoxylin whilst the cytoplasm is coloured by the eosin.
		This chemical is readily oxidised to haematein and it is this oxidised form of haematoxylin, which is the colouring agent in the above technique.
		Connective tissue and muscle are coloured differently because the staining affinity of the tissue may be affected by the dye molecular size, density of the tissue, pH of the dye bath and/ or the use of colourless "dyes".
