The Haemodracon riebeckii was described by Peters (1882) as Diplodactylus riebeckii, based on three specimens collected by the two German naturalists Dr. George Schweinfurth and Dr. E.
The Haemodracon trachyrhinus was described by Boulenger (1899) as Phyllodactylus trachyrhinus based on two specimens recorded by the British zoologists W. Ogilvie-Grant and H. Forbes, who visited Socotra and Abd al Kuri in 1898.
It grows to be about 9 cm, and resembles a dwarf Haemodracon riebeckii, with larger scales, although the scales on the snout are distinctly larger and conical.

A Hemidactylus, similar to H. turcicus, which was recorded in the mountains on the bark of a tree, might be a further new species.
Haemodracon riebeckii PETERS, 1882, with a total length of almost 300 mm, is the largest known leaf-toed gecko, which can be easily distinguished by their digits, which bear a single pair of enlarged terminal scansors.
In 1999 a Haemodracon was also caught on Samha for the first time by Joger, and it could be, that it is a further new species.
