Haemophilia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Haemophilia A and B are inherited in an X-linked recessive pattern.
The genes for both Haemophilia A and Haemophilia B are located on the X chromosome; other clotting factor deficiencies exist, but are not considered to be types of haemophilia because they are passed on through autosomes rather than through the X chromosome.
Haemophilia is particularly dangerous in adult women because of the recurring bloodflows involved in menstruation; so they must take clotting factor to survive.

Supporters have pointed out that haemophilia victims who received transfusions in the 1970s and 1980s did not have any of the risks that we now know exist explained to them, although scientific knowledge available to Whitehall at that time suggested that hepatitis C could be transmitted through blood.
It is clear that hepatitis C infection contributes to deaths from the complications of chronic liver disease, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular cancer.

Haemophilia B   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
Haemophilia B or Christmas Disease is a recessively inherited X-linked bleeding disorder which results from deficiency of procoagulant factor IX Affected males suffer from joint and muscle bleeds and easy bruising, the severity of which is closely correlated with the level of activity of coagulation factor IX in their blood (FIX:C).
Haemophilia severity is defined by FIX:C level in plasma, where normal individuals have between 0.5 and 1.5iu/ml; severely affected individuals have <0.02iu/ml, moderate 0.02-0.10iu/ml and mild greater than 0.109iu/ml.
The Haemophilia B Database can be consulted to determine whether the change has been previously reported in a patient having similar disease severity.
