The boundaries of this were - towards the N. the Haemus, on the E. the Euxine Sea, on the S. the Propontis, the Hellespont and the Aegean, and towards the W. the Nestus.
One district in the extreme north-west of Thrace lay beyond the watershed separating the streams that flow into the Aegean from those that reach the Danube: this was the territory of Sardica, the modern Sophia.
One of these skirted the southern coast, being a continuation of the Via Egnatia, which ran from Dyrrhachium to Thessalonica, thus connecting the Adriatic and the Aegean; it became of the first importance after the foundation of Constantinople, because it was the direct line of communication between that city and Rome.

In addition to the central mountain range, there are some large rings, craters, hillocks, &c., on the floor; and on the inner slope of the W. border there is a very large circular enclosure resembling a ring-plain, not recorded in the maps.
There is a small but distinct central mountain, south of which stands a number of smaller hills, forming with the first a circular arrangement, suggestive of the idea that they represent the relics of a large central crater.
A small ring-plain with a central mountain is connected with the S.W. wall; and, running in a N. direction from this, is a short mountain arm which joins a large circular enclosure with a low broken border standing on the N. side of the Mare Tranquilitatis.

 The Geto-Dacians
Burebista's country, rooted in the former social and political tradition, was strengthened by the king's conquest of Greek cities, like Tomis, Histria and Callatis on the Black Sea shore, and by eliminating the threat of Celtic invasion.
The unifying centre of the Geto-Dacian state lay in the Orastie mountain zone (Sureanu) - a natural Transylvanian stronghold; there, Burebista developed a whole system of fortifications, which was to be continued by his followers Dicomes, Scoryllo, Cotiso.
His successful unifying endeavour, which led to the unity of the Geto-Dacian people, language and civilisation, made the king feel stronger, a fact which led him into believing that he was capable of measuring his military strength with that of the Romans.

Materials in the Haemus Mountains were mapped as regional assemblages of Fra Mauro Formation, crater ejecta, and dark Serenitatis-like mare materials.
The largest contrasts are between the Haemus mountains ([[Rfraktur]]4 = 0.95 to 0.99) and the background Serenitatis and Tranquillitatis mare units ([[Rfraktur]]4 = 1.00 to 1.02), and between the larger craters (Menelaus, Plinius, and Dawes) and their surroundings.
It is possible that small mare patches in the Haemus mountains are influencing the spectral behavior enough at our spatial resolution to be detected in the model, but this does not dominate the effect observed here.

In the time of the Antonines, the martial regions of Thrace, from the mountains of Hæmus and Rhodope, to the Bosphorus and the Hellespont, had assumed the form of a province.
On the opposite side, the province of Cilicia was terminated by the mountains of Syria: the inland country, separated from the Roman Asia by the River Halys, and from Armenia by the Euphrates, had once formed the independent kingdom of Cappadocia.
In this place we may observe, that the northern shores of the Euxine, beyond Trebizond in Asia, and beyond the Danube in Europe, acknowledged the sovereignty of the emperors, and received at their hands either tributary princes or Roman garrisons.

Most noticeable is the boundary between the rugged highlands (Montes Haemus) and the smooth volcanic plains of Mare Serenitatis.
The Montes Haemus (or Haemus Mountains) are part of the prominent 740-kilometer-wide main ring of the Serenitatis Basin, which formed 3.89 billion years ago when an asteroid 50–100 kilometers across slammed into the Moon.
These mountains are 2–3 kilometers high, but were probably 5 kilometers high before the basin was flooded a few hundred million years later by basaltic lava flows that formed the smooth plains.

 Alexander's Campaigns in Europe
The Triballians lived south of the Danube river in the modern province of Pleven, in mountainous terrain.
One of the first encounters could have been decisive: as Alexander's men marched through a defile at the foot of the mountains, they realized that the Treballi had seized the high ground and had manouvered heavy carts onto the heights, which could be used as weapons against the Macedonians and Greeks far below.
Crossing the ridge, Alexander then proceed across the Haemus mountains towards the Danube river, where he found that Syrmus, King of the Triballians, had sheltered his stores and noncombatants (and later, himself) on an island in the middle of the river.
