Hafez was the pen name of Shamseddin Mohammad - who was born Shiraz - a Persian who turned to the serious study of philosophy, poetry and theology, early in life.
In Hafez' case the title was not unwarranted, for he was a dervish who taught the Qoran in an aademy founded by his patron, the vizier Haji Kiwaneddin.
Hafez lived in Shiraz for most of his life and he still lies there, in his beloved city, where he longed to be and his tomb is still a place of pilgrimage, including visits as tributes from lovers of poetry.

Hafez's principal verse form, one that he brought to a perfection never achieved before or since, was the ghazel, a lyric poem of 6 to 15 couplets linked by unity of subject and symbolism rather than by a logical sequence of ideas.
Hafez's achievement was to give these conventional subjects a freshness and subtlety that completely relieves his poetry of tedious formalism.
Hafez also reduced the panegyric element of his poems to a mere one or two lines, leaving the remainder of the poem for his ideas.

Hafez: Dance of Life is, for this reason, a difficult and, at the same time, an interesting subject.
This is true representation of what Hafez really is; despite the purity of our motives or the purity of our love, his is a tangled, dense, multilayered, ambiguous verse drawing together all the cultural threads from which the Iranian experience is woven.
Hafez: Dance of Life, is a moment in the dance that goes on in space between communities, where they approach by never quite touch, where the reaching out by both sides occurs, where our beliefs that there can be global understanding, peace, and love undergo a cruel testing.
