Colin Potter & The Hafler Trio
The Hafler Trio seem overall more monochrome in approach, with so it seems for the listener who doesn't know any better, whereas Potter seems to be using more sound effects to create the soundscapes that he does, maybe less organic and more electronic.
The Hafler Trio is Andrew M. McKenzie (from Newcastle, England - currently residing in Tallinn, Estonia) working in the field of psychoacoustics and sonic research.
Recently, The Hafler Trio are concerned with the ramifications of technology and the creation of the most extreme, all inclusive experience as possible, that 'resonates' over a period of time lasting much longer than just the physical time it takes to apprehend it, and affects and engages all levels of being.

Hafler Trio has always asked more of the listener than many sound artists do, with questions and ideas that provoke and, like an open invitation, await response from those who are willing to tackle, often at length, the ideas presented.
The music is a continuation of the drone music that The Hafler Trio have been exploring ever since their return to the music, late 2002.
Both the music, an austere, even chilly, assemblage of drones whose origins are as difficult to fathom as the architectural bigger picture they fit into, and the texts that invariably accompany it, with their strange, slightly surreal juxtaposition of grammatical abstruseness and tired cliché.

 Hafler Trio, The
The Hafler Trio as it now exists is an organisation dedicated to the dissemination of information, principally in the recorded medium, but neccessarily involved in the intersections between the related disciplines and the furtherance of their effectiveness to provide an antidote to the tendencies prevalent in their use at the present time.
The releases of The Hafler Trio are primarily concerned with research and presentation of the findings that result, and as such are a coninually growing and evolving library - a source of stimulation to action - in direct opposition to the lethargic obsession with escapism provided by the means of entertainment currently available.
In short, The Hafler Trio facilitates interaction in an organic manner that is not directly coerced, but unless effort on the part of the recipient is engaged, the circle cannot be completed.

Hafler Trio, aka Andrew McKenzie, devoted himself to highly experimental music that toyed with electronic clusters, tape loops, found sounds, etc. At times, he achieved an impressive synthesis of the languages of concrete, industrial, cosmic and ambient music, perhaps best experienced on A Thirsty Fish (1987) and on the six-movement "mass" Inoutof (1988).

The Hafler Trio - Biography - AOL Music
Prolific and enigmatic, the Hafler Trio masterminded some of the most challenging and innovative sonic experiments of their time -- defining music as simply organized sound, their unique synthesis of electronics, samples and tape loops probed the psychoacoustic power of noise, exploring not only its sensory effects but its physical ramifications as well.
Much of the Hafler Trio's mystique stems from the deliberate misinformation the group consistently set forth -- although their records regularly came packaged with deluxe graphs, diagrams and essays detailing the purported effects of sound on the listener, the scientific authenticity of their "findings" is debatable; for example, their 1984 debut, Bang!
In 1996, the Hafler Trio also mounted Who Sees Goes On, a series of thematically-linked limited-edition releases.

He formed The Hafner Trio with ex-Cabaret Voltaire Chris Watson in the early eighties, and has since produced some of the most challenging experimental electronic music around, with a body of work spread over countless releases.
Since the departure of Watson, at the end of the eighties, the sound of the Hafler Trio has progressively turned to drones and vast ambient sonic spaces, pushing the boundaries of music far beyond the realm of what is generally accepted.
Drone records can often appear to lack emotion or substance, but it is far from being the case with these two tracks; all it takes to appreciate the full impact of this record is an open mind and a feel for vast spaces.
