Topic: Hafting

  Paleo End Scraper -- Hafting
Most of the literature leaves one with the opinion that some of the PES were hafted and that some were not.
For example, this is an asymmetrical PES with retouched lateral edges that strongly suggest that it was hafted (as I have depicted in the image).
I believe this PES was hafted because of the relationship between the right lateral edge retouch and the spur (broken from the right lateral edge).

INTERPRETING THE FUNCTION OF STONE TOOLS:CHAPTER 3
Wedge hafting was achieved by making a mortise in the end of the drill shaft in which the bit was held in place by the pressure exerted between the drill shaft and the contact material (Figure 27b).
Hafting with sinew was carried out by cutting a deep slot into the drill haft into which the drill bit was inserted and held in place by wrapping the sinew around the haft and the protruding edges of the drill bit (Figure 27d).
Haft wear has been defined as wear traces "which make little sense as traces of utilisation, but does conform to what is known or expected of wear traces from minor movements of a tool against its haft" (Cahen et al.

 Hafting Knives
One choice is to use a drill with various sizes of bits and drill out several holes to the depth of the tang.
What you are doing here is making sure there are no lumps, no glue away from the hafting area and finally that the hafting area is completely covered.
For example, haft one knife handle of wood or bone with a steel rasp.

These are the essential supplies for hafting and coloring primitive weapons and tools.
Selected for use by bowmakers, arrowsmiths, and knife makers, or anyone interested in fastening or painting in the ancient way.

Re: Primitive hafting technology - any ideas?
If the stone has no cavities, the hafting has to surround the stone almost from all sides.
Also, the split stick must be wrapped with strong fibers that press both halves of the slit stick against the stone.
Yes, it looks pretty strong to me. (I used to be structural engineer.) Well, this hafting method looks simple, but it took some intelligence to invent it.

 Hafting and Natural Glues
The methods of hafting used by 'primitive' man involved natural materials, which by their very nature resist change contrary to many modern adhesives which deteriorate over the long haul of time.
The resin is then used in socket and notched hafting conditions and allowed to set over low heat as the turpentine and volatiles evaporate.
The hafting is brushed with the glue as it is wrapped and allowed to dry in a warm location over a fire or in the sun.

Hafting a Hebridean Axe - Sword Forum International
The haft would be smaller on the end away from the axe head.
The other would be to fit it on the end and have a slot cut into the haft, just like on the axes you see at the harware store.
On the original pick handle hafting I used metal wedges driven in at the top and it seems to be very secure.
