Hagar's first major success, however, came from his work with the group Montrose on their debut and sophomore albums, including the Hagar-penned song "Bad Motor Scooter".
In 1983-84 Sammy Hagar and Neal Schon formed the supergroup HSAS (HagarSchonAaronsonShrieve) along with former Foghat bassist Kenny Aaronson and former Santana drummer Michael Shrieve.
Hagar pulled together his new solo band, called The Waboritas, consisting again of David Lauser on drums, as well as former keyboardist Jesse Harms, and new to the mix was former Busboys guitarist Vic Johnson, and former Tommy Tutone bassist Mona.
Montrose was the original Californian hard rock band, pioneering the kind of short and punchy songs that would be a template for later and more successful bands such as Van Halen.
After departing, Hagar released a succession of solo albums in the mid-to-late 70s and early 80s (often with the remaining members of Montrose) as well as a one-off live album with the band HagarSchonAaronsonShrieve.
The original Montrose line-up reuinited on Sammy Hagar's Marching to Mars (1997) performing "Leaving the Warmth of the Womb" and on stage as an encore at a few Sammy concerts in 2003 and 2005.
He is an ex of the greatly lamented Montrose, and the not so lamented Van Halen (or Van Hagar as they became known at the time), plus, of course, of a glittering solo career.
Schon is at his hard rock best, peeling out the opening riff before falling back into the up-tempo grove with Aaronson and Shrieve, to allow Sammy Hagar to come in over the top.
A couple of times Schon is allowed space to come roaring back into the songs, where he absolutely nails a couple of solos whilst Aaronson and Shrieve fill out the sound not leaving space for even an Iron Filling.

Hagar is a singer, guitarist, and songwriter whose father was a professional boxer.
Hagar then took time out to tour with Journey guitarist Neal Schon, Kenny Aaronson (bass) and Michael Shrieve (drums, ex-Santana), recording a live album under the band's initials HSAS.
However, he continued to pursue a parallel, if intermittent, solo career which continues to be characterized by a refreshing lack of bombast in a genre not noted for its subtlety.
HAGAR SCHON AARONSON SHRIEVE LP Thru The Fire(Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
Of course, Through the Fire is by the numbers, not in a league with Hagar's peak in the landmark Montrose, but as enjoyable as his solo '80s work.
Hagar, Schon, Aronson, Shrieve approaches each cut as an epic, and some fat could be cut from each, but Hagar and Schon wisely use the opportunity to stretch their considerable AOR muscles.
Schon went on to a more restrictive role with Bad English (featuring Jon Waite in the Perry role), and tried on hair metal with Hardline, again allowing him to cut loose but lacking the classic rock crunch of Through the Fire.

Journey axeman Neal Schon satisfies his yearning for a four-piece Van Halen/Montrose environment through meat-and-potatoes metalhead Sammy Hagar on this heavily doctored live document, the creatively titled Through the Fire.
Journeyman Aaronson, who looks cool and played bass on tour with Billy Idol, gives some new wave credence to this quartet, in image only.
HSAS approaches each cut as an epic, and some fat could be cut from each, but Bay-Area brothers Hagar and Schon wisely use the opportunity to stretch their considerable AOR muscles.
Neal Joseph Schon was born on February 27, 1954 at Tinker Air Force Base near Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
He picked up his first instrument at the age of 5 and by the age of 15 he had joined Santana and was traveling the world.
His solo albums are Late Nite, Beyond The Thunder, Electric World, Piranha Blues, the Grammy Nominated album called Voice and his latest solo album, "i on U".
The mid-'70s found Cochran-cum-Bayete hook up with former Santana drummer Michael Shrieve (see separate entry), bassist Doni Harvey and guitarist Pat Thrall.
Never less than entertaining, the collection attracted favorable reviews, but in an era of disco madness and punk mayhem proved too quirky for radio, peaking at #120.
Downplaying the debut's guitar pyrotechnics, the new collection featured a less spacey, more commercial, but less innovative collection of funk-rock.

After spending several years as the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for the mid-'70s hard rock band Montrose, Sammy Hagar began a solo career that produced several hits and made him an album rock favorite.
Hagar became a true star once he joined Van Halen in 1985, but he was a popular hard rocker ever since his first album with Montrose...

Many times I ordered it from online stores, just to find out their catalog hadn't been updated in awhile...well guess what, it's been reissued!
Ok, here's the story: before joining Van Halen, Sammy Hagar did a one-off project with Journey guitarist Neil Schon and two no-names (Aaronson and Shrieve, obviously) on bass and drums.
The album was recorded live (with the audience mixed out) which accounts for the RAW and HEAVY sound -- if you think Sammy Hagar's music is wimpy, check out this CD!
