Notable are also the shieldmaidens who were "ordinary" women who had chosen the path of the warrior.
Otherwise there are few accounts from the 14th to the 18th century, but the clergy, such as Olaus Magnus (1555) wrote about the difficulties of extinguishing the old beliefs.
The story related in Þrymskviða appears to have been unusually resilient, like the romantic story of Hagbard and Signy, and versions of both were recorded in the 17th century and as late as the 19th century.

It is possible that Salernitano based his own story on the celtic myth, but there is little evidence of Tristan and Isolde mythology penetrating the Italian cultural stories.
Mariotto and Gianozza is much more likely to be inspired by more well known star-crossed lovers like Hero and Leander, Pyramus and Thisbe, Floris and Blanchefleur, Troilus and Cressida and Hagbard and Signy.
There are so many Isolde's in this tale - I am so confused!
