On 1 Jan 1986 Vianen, Everdingen and Hagestein merged to form the new municipality of Vianen.
Hagestein had 1.000 inhabitants, in the "Vijfheerenlanden on the Lek river, SE of Vianen.
Hagestein was the only settlement, the municipal seat was in Everdingen.

Due to the short length of the study period and few recaptured salmonids (salmon, sea trout, rainbow trout) no conclusive evidence about the effects of the shipping lock on salmonid migration was obtained.
However, the results do suggest that the Hagestein barrage complex forms a serious barrier for upstream migration of salmonids.

This drawing was found in a book or a museum by Hans Korting of Kapellen.
