Haggai - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Haggai (חַגַּי, Standard Hebrew and Tiberian Hebrew Ḥaggay) was one of the twelve minor prophets and the author of the Book of Haggai.
He was the first of three prophets (with Zechariah, his contemporary, and Malachi, who lived about one hundred years later), whose ministry belonged to the period of Jewish history which began after the return from captivity in Babylon.
Haggai's prophecies have been characterized by the following: "There is a ponderous and simple dignity in the emphatic reiteration addressed alike to every class of the community, prince, priest, and people, 'Be strong, be strong, be strong' (2:4).

Haggai may have viewed the restoration of order by Darius and the appointment of Zerubbabel as a sign of the end of Gentile rule and preparation for the messianic kingdom.
Haggai suggested how they should respond to the excuses people were making for not resuming work on the Temple (Haggai 1:2).
Haggai's answer was that if it was right for them to rebuild their own houses, it was also right for them to rebuild the Temple (Haggai 1:3-4).

Haggai and Zechariah appeared much about the same time, eighteen years after the return, when the building of the temple was both retarded by its enemies and neglected by its friends.
Haggai began two months before Zechariah, who was raised up to second him, that out of the mouth of two witnesses the word might be established.
Haggai spoke of him as the glory of the latter house, and Zechariah as the man, the branch.

 Haggai
The name Haggai means "festival, feast, festive." Some suggest it may be a shortened form of Haggiah which means "festival of Jehovah." This has led many to conjecture that he may have been born on one of the major festival or feast days of the Jews (Passover, for example).
Haggai 1:1 dates it in the "second year of Darius the king." This is Darius I, son of Hystaspes (522-486 BC).
Haggai teaches us that faithfulness and material blessings are directly connected; that "when a good work is awaiting its accomplishment, the time to do it is now" (Farrar); that "discouragement, however profound, is not an adequate reason for neglecting duties, even when they seem to be encompassed with difficulty.

Haggai reminded them that they were a theocracy not merely another ethnic group repopulating their land under the Persian rule.
Haggai’s writing covers only a four month period, yet, the effectiveness of his message is immediately apparent.
Although Haggai preached to the people during a public festival, he was not looking to them for the impetus to build the house of God but to the Davidic line, namely, Zerubbabel (1Chron 3:1,19).

Bible Survey: The Book of Haggai
The name Haggai (pronounced ha-GUY, with the stress on the second syllable) seems to be an adjective derived from the Hebrew word for "feast"; therefore his name means "festive".
There are two references to Haggai in the Bible outside of his own book: Ezra 5:1 and 6:14.
Haggai's name is often linked with Zechariah (there may even be an allusion to him in Zechariah 8:9), since Zechariah was prophesying about the same time in Judah and Jerusalem.

Haggai brought messages of encouragement for the second wave of exiles returning to Jerusalem led by Zerubbabel (a diplomat and member of Judah's royal family) and Joshua (a priest).
This period was one of mixed emotions for the returning exiles: great elation at being back home, with high hopes for the futhure; yet depression bordering on despair at the state of disrepair of their once-beautiful city and the uphill struggle that would be required to restore it.
Haggai challenged the people to get their priorities right, and to place the worship of God ahead of their own comfort.
