Hagi Port is located on the Sea of Japan in the north of Yamaguchi Prefecture at the west of Honshu.
The Hagi Museum was established to be center for "Hagiology", a word we use to describe "the study of Hagi", which is one of the main focuses of the Hagi city plan.
Here at Hagi Museum the "students" of Hagiology are members of the public who can play a primary role in research and study into various fields, such as unique characteristics of the Hagi area preserved as artifacts and historical objects exclusive to this area of Japan.

Early in the 17th century, Mori Terumoto, a then samurai ruler, built the Hagi Castle at the foot of Mt. Shizuki-yama at the northwest of Hagi, and this place had been the seat of the Yamaguchi prefectural government until the administration was moved to the city of Yamaguchi in the middle of the 19th century.
The site of Hagi Castle, on which some portions of castle walls and stonewalls remain, is open to the public and today called Shizuki Park.
