In the 1850s the land for Hagley Park, was a mixture of scrub and swamp, with creeks feeding to Otakaro river (Avon).
In 1862 the part of Hagley Park known as Pilgrim's Corner or Little Hagley Park was set aside by Carlton Mill Bridge for Māori to use as a meeting or resting place when visiting Christchurch.
In 1905 116 acres of North Hagley Park was fenced off for the New Zealand International Exhibition in 1906-07.

Hagley Park, named after the country seat of Lord Lyttelton, Chairman of the Canterbury Association, was set aside as a reserve forming the western boundary of Christchurch before the town was even inhabited.
Hagley Park's legal status has itself been the cause of some controversy over the years and it has added fuel to the flames of other disputes.
It decreed that the Park shall be reserved forever as a public park and shall be open for recreation and enjoyment of the public.

Hagley Park's botanical gardens contain a collection of beautiful flowers and trees from around the world.

A police patrol vehicle also slowed down, but sped on, possibly relieved that the only disturbance of the peace carried on by this nocturnal band, was their loud strong voices booming songs and prayer on behalf of the organisations on Hagley Park and its surrounding communities.
Their next stop was at the Shell gas station at 53 Hagley Park Road, which, uncharacteristic of most gas stations on major roads, was closed.

Hagley Hall (grid reference SO920807), of Hagley, Worcestershire and its park are among the supreme achievements of eighteenth-century English architecture and landscape gardening.
Before the death of his father in 1751, he began to landscape the grounds in the new "picturesque" style, and between 1756 and 1760 it was he who was responsible for the building of the house as it is seen today.
It is set in 350 acres (1.4 km²) of superbly landscaped deer park graced by Fallow Deer of several colors.

Tracing and colouring of a map of Hagley Park, originally from 1850, to illustrate the Public Domains Amendment Act 1895 and the proposed Harper Ave deviation 1970.
The idea of setting out a road for carriages and horses in the manner of those in Hyde Park was mooted over the years but specific proposals were rejected, as was a proposal to set out a cycle track around the Park in 1897.
Automobiles first attempted to enter the Park in 1904 when it was proposed to put in a road to allow cars a scenic drive; this was a more sedate age when the Park was seen as a destination rather than an obstacle on the way to somewhere else.
