Armenian Secret Army for the Liberation of Armenia - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ASALA was founded in 1975 in Beirut during the Lebanese Civil War by Hagop Tarakchian and Hagop Hagopian with the help of sympathetic Palestinians.
At the time, Turkey was in political turmoil, and Hagopian believed that the time was right to avenge the deaths of the Armenians who died during the Armenian Genocide and to force the Turkish government to a cede to them the territory of Wilsonian Armenia for the purpose of unification with the existing Armenian SSR.
Hagop Hagopian, one of the group's founders, was assassinated on a sidewalk in an affluent neighborhood in Athens, Greece on April 28, 1988, his assailants, Hovsep A., Vartan G., Garabed K., and Albert "Sultan-Minas", were all ASALA members and close friends of Hapopian.

"Born in Egypt, Hagop Hagopian returned to Armenia, his ancestral home, while it was still a Soviet republic.
Frank has done a great disservice to the readers of the LA Weekly with his imprecise and erroneous use of the term, "Social Realist." His inaccurate comment not only reveals an ignorance of art history, it also provides a perfect example of the shabbiness of today’s art criticism.
Social Realism in general refers to any realistic artwork that brings attention to the plight of the poor, the disenfranchised, or the working class - so in actuality Hagopian’s paintings, with their poetic references to the suffering of the Armenian people, could easily fall within the genre of Social Realism.
