The IJN Haguro (羽黒) was one of the 4-member Nachi class of heavy cruiser of the Imperial Japanese Navy -- the other ships of the class being the Nachi, Ashigara[?] (足柄), and the Myoko[?] (妙高).
The Haguro was laid down on 16 March 1925, launched and named on 24 March 1928, and was commissioned into the Imperial Navy on 25 April 1929.
On 19 June 1944 she survived the Battle of the Philippine Sea[?], and on 23-25 October 1944 she took light damage in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, before finally being sunk in the Indian Ocean on 16 May 1945.

Haguro had indeed detected the 26th Destroyer Flotilla at about the time she was seen on the destroyers’ radar screens to make a violent alteration of course to the west.
In Haguro, Motora was searching the sea on the port side through binoculars when he heard the look-out shouting ‘Torpedo tracks!’ Haguro was actually turning to starboard at full speed when the torpedoes hit her port side, abreast of the three forward 8-inch gun turrets.
Haguro was stopped, listing further to port, with some of her close-range weapons still in action, but only sporadically, as individual crews were able to load and fire them.

Haguro, a 10,980-ton (standard displacement) Myoko class heavy cruiser, was built at Nagasaki, Japan.
Haguro was also present, with the Japanese main aircraft carrier force, during the Battle of the Coral Sea in May. In the next month's Battle of the Midway, she was part of the Midway Occupation Force.
Haguro was hit by three torpedoes and sunk, with the loss of about three-quarters of her crew of some 1200 officers and men.

At Haguro there were thirty-one sub-temples on the mountain,occupied by Tendai priests; at the foot of the mountain were about 360 married "yamabushi" who maintained pilgrims' lodgings and supervised a complicated parish network.
This survival of Shugendoh, in recognizable form, at Haguro has been due principally to the fact that Nishikawa was forced to make compromises in order to keep the support of the "yamabushi" and their lucrative parishes.

Shortly after Haguro launched a scout plane and at 0146 she reported an enemy force of one cruiser and three destroyers twenty miles south.
These shell were all duds [6], but they still caused considerable damage, holing the light cruiser forward, forcing her to sheer out of formation and to reduce her speed to 28 knots to keep from submarining.
Haguro was lightly damaged by gunfire and Myoko lost two torpedo tubes as the result of her collision.

Mt. Haguro rises 419 meters above sea level, and along with Gassan and Yudono is one of three peaks of Dewa.
In Basho's time the Haguro Gongen was a combination of Buddhist and Shinto worship, but in the Meiji period the two religions were officially separated and this became the Haguro Jinja.
In the evening after eating, they worshipped at the Haguro shrine and when they came back wrote poetry, but did not complete their sequence.

During the battle of the Java Sea, Haguro sank the Dutch cruiser De Ruyter and the Dutch destroyer Kortenaer.
In March the same ships fought an action which led to the sinking of British cruiser Exeter, while the destroyers USS Pope and Encounter were sunk by Ashigara and Myoko.
Ashigara and Haguro were sunk by allied submarines during the year 1945.

The closest the Shinkansen could get me to Mount Haguro was Yamagata City, in Yamagata Prefecture, which isn't very close; from there, I would have to take local trains.
You see, the maps I have don't show where Haguro is. They do denote the location of Mount Gassan, the second of the three moutains, but they also fail to show Yudono, the third mountain.
Basically, I knew that the narrator had turned towards Haguro at a town called Mogame; but it wasn't on the map either.
