Yamagata Prefecture is located in the southwest corner of Tohoku, facing the Sea of Japan.
The city of Tsuruoka, the towns of Fujishima, Haguro and Kushibiki and the village of Asahi (all from Higashitagawa District) and the town of Atsumi from Nishitagawa District merged to form the new city of Tsuruoka.
Yamagata Prefecture is also known for its local dialect Yamagata-ben, sometimes thought of as backward sounding and the butt of jokes in other parts of Japan.

Haguro (羽黒) was the last of the four-member Myoko class of heavy cruiser of the Imperial Japanese Navy.
Haguro was laid down at the Mitsubishi shipyard in Nagasaki on 16 March 1925, launched and named on 24 March 1928, and was commissioned into the Imperial Navy on 25 April 1929.

Yamagata is extremely ancient, tracing its origins to a prehistoric settlement during the Jomon period.
The Mizuno clan occupied the castle town of Yamagata, building their castle in the 14th century and holding sway until they were in turn displaced by the Meiji Restoration.

Haguro is the seat of one the two main Shugendo orders and the wooded peak has some of the most massive and beautiful temples in all of Japan.

Mount Haguro is the smallest of the three mountains at just 414 metres, but is now the most visited.
Mount Gassan which separates inland Yamagata from the coastal Shonai region, is the largest of the three mountains with a peak of 1984 metres.

Dewa Sanzan means "Three Mountains of Dewa" and indeed comprises the three sacred mountains of Haguro-san (羽黒山), Gas-san (月山) and Yudono-san (湯殿山), clustered together in the ancient province of Dewa (modern-day Yamagata prefecture).
Holy to the Japanese Shinto religion and especially the mountain ascetic cult of Shugendo, Dewa Sanzan are a popular pilgrimage site visited by many, including famed haiku poet Matsuo Basho on his Narrow Road to the Deep North.
Festivals are held to celebrate the opening and closing of the shrines.

So, hands full, me and the box were on our way to Yamagata Prefecture in the north of Japan, to locate the three sacred mountains in that area.
The closest the Shinkansen could get me to Mount Haguro was Yamagata City, in Yamagata Prefecture, which isn't very close; from there, I would have to take local trains.
You see, the maps I have don't show where Haguro is. They do denote the location of Mount Gassan, the second of the three moutains, but they also fail to show Yudono, the third mountain.

There are six dolls that remain in the Shonai Region, including ones at Matsuyama Elementary School, Haguro Daiichi Elementary School in Haguro Town, and Minami Hirata Elementary School in Hirata Town.
Sidney Gulick, 3d, grandson of Dr. Gulick, was deeply touched that the old dolls have been kept safely, and he began giving new dolls to Japan about ten years ago.

There are famous shukubo all over Japan, but among the best are: Sanshin-Gosai-Den on Mt. Haguro in Yamagata, the Youth Hostel in Takayama, Gifu, and Kyoto.
One does not have to be a believer to stay at most shukubo and it is usually cheaper than what you would pay at a ryokan (Japanese Inn).
Although there are far too many temples to list them all, here are a few of the best ones: the temple on Mt. Haguro in Yamagata, Horyu-ji and Kofuku-ji in Nara, and Ginkaku-ji (or Kinkaku-ji) in Kyoto.

At the turn-off to Haguro Town, turn right (signposted to Kamugihara Park).
Coming from Haguro town, when you get to the 112, go straight across the crossroads and its just past the lights on your right.

Does somebody know what other places offer Shugen pilgrimages throuough Japan, especially in the spring timeframe (March, April).
I found one offered by the Ideha museum in Yamagata, unfortunately this is only done in September.
Also I wonder if that is the only place in Japan where one can join a pilgrimage?
