 USS Newcomb — Nate Cook
We did our usual thing: screening the larger ships, shore bombardment, etc. We also spent time north of Iwo, near Haha Jima and Chichi Jima as a radar "picket" boat to warn the folks at Iwo of enemy aircraft heading south.
Iwo Jima is a tiny volcanic island about 5 miles long and 2 miles wide at its widest.
It is some 600 nautical miles from Japan, and is one of a whole string of islands stretching southward from Tokyo.

 RECOLLECTION
I well remember the names of those three major specks of land in the Bonins: Chichi Jima, Haha Jima, Iwo Jima.
In late August 1944 we sorted with our fast carrier group TG38.4 from Eniwetok Atoll and by dawn of 1 September were standing off to the east of a little volcanic island called Chichi Jima.
The featured speaker for this later event proudly recalled his naval service in World War II, telling us about when, as the youngest carrier pilot in the Navy, he was shot down at a remote island called Chichi Jima, and was rescued by a submarine!

 Recollections of Iwo Jima
Tokyo Rose was on playing all the beautiful records of Glenn Miller, etc. During her show she said, "I know the Marines are loading onto ships in Hawaii for the invasion of Iwo Jima", she said "I don't know the exact date but it will be Iwo Jima." We all know what happened after that.
In summary, if we were able to rewrite those citations of 1945, I firmly believe that Wes and Jerry would want to join me in replacing our names with all the members of the U.S.S. Lowndes who contributed to the important role of our ship in the battle of Iwo Jima.
I remember when the Lowndes was 4 or 5 hours out from the island and watching, as everyone aboard, the fireworks from, I imagine ships and planes and fire from the Japanese on Iwo Jima.

Iwo Jima received attacks on 24 June and 4 July and Chichi Jima and Haha Jima on the latter date.
Iwo Jima in the Volcano Islands, 750 miles from Tokyo, provided three sites for airfields, and was admirably situated for the establishment of a fighter base for supporting Marianas-based B-29's operating over the home islands of the Empire.
While some of the fast carriers and battleships were disposed to the westward to meet this threat, other carriers on 15 and 16 June attacked the Japanese bases of Iwo Jima and Chichi Jima.

USS Belleau Wood, CVL-24 Unit History
In a dogfight over Guam four enemy planes were shot down and the next day assaults were continued there and over Rota to soften up Jap defenses for the imminent in-vasion The armada then moved farther north for raids in the Bonins, attacking Haha Jima, Chichi Jima, and Iwa Jima.
Following this strike, the task force turned toward the Bonin Islands beginning a series of raids against Chichi Jima and Haha Jima, neutralizing them as staging areas for Jap raids on Iwo Jima where U.S. forces were storming ashore.

On Haha and Titi the populations have become so small that the possibility of extinction in the near future can not be ruled out (Anon., 1991).
On the uninhabited islands of Kitaiou (bat population unknown) and Minamiiou (population estimated at a few hundreds in 1982 [Ishii, 1983]) the cause of the population decline is unknown, but development and loss of suitable habitat and food plants have been implicated (Matsumoto, 1978 and 1980).
On Minamiiou the fruit bats appear to be most active during the day (Anon., 1991).

 Iwo Jima: February 19 - March 12, 1945
The next morning, February 23, Marines reached the summit of Iwo Jima's Mt. Suribachi, and raised a small American flag, which was replaced two hours later by a flag nearly twice the size.
Flying under a low ceiling and hampered by generally poor visibility, the planes searched a 60° sector due south of Iwo Jima out to 150 miles, before returning to a rendezvous point five miles east of the island.

 BY CONTAINER SHIP TO JAPAN
We missed seeing some islands at night, but it was good to see volcanic Lihir Island (Papua New Guinea), coral Ulul Island (Caroline islands), the impressive volcanic Northern Mariana islands of Pagan, Ascuncion and Farallon de Pajaros and volcanic Haha Jima, Chichi Jima and Muko Jima (Japan).
The route was almost due north through the Coral Sea, around the southeastern tip of New Ireland (Papua New Guinea), through the Caroline Islands, past the Northern Mariana Islands and past the Nampo Shoto Islands (Japan).
Life aboard ship was very quiet, and some would even think it very dull.

The Ogasawara Islands, which became part of Tokyo in 1968, are composed of four islands: Chichi Jima, Haha Jima, Muko Jima and Iwo Jima.
Another declassifed document of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, the June 4 1957 memoir, confirms that the U.S. Navy stored one nuclear weapon on Chichi Jima in February 1956 when the island was under complete U.S. occupation, and the Ogasawara Islands became a nuclear storage.
Iwo Jima residents still are not allowed to go back to live on their native island.

Only the two largest islands, Chichi Jima and Haha Jima, are inhabited, by a population of less than two thousand.
During World War II, the Ogasawara Islands, in particular Iwo Jima, saw fighting between the US and Japan, which resulted in the evacuation of the island population and occupation of the islands by the US until 1968 when the islands were returned to Japan.
Our dive site was a World War II shipwreck to the north of Chichi Jima, which was pretty interesting.
