A contemporary was Wu Han §d(¤é§t) who earlier wrote the Hongwu Emperor Biography (Zhu Yuanzhang Zhuan) but who later provoked Mao Zedong into the disastrous Cultural revolution by his drama ¡§Hai Rui Dismissed¡¨ which subtly.criticized Mao by unmistakenly cloaking Peng Dehuai as Hai Rui.
Wu Sangui has been blamed by most Chinese as a traitor equivalent to Qin Hui (Song Dynasty Prime Minister who executed the patriot Yue Fei), whilst his apologists would exonerate him for his family obligation and for his love to his concubine.
In regards to Wu Feng of Taiwan, I would like to point out that he actually sacrificed himself to stop the constant friction and fighting between the Han settlers and the Taiwanese aborigines.

It was at Mao's personal direction that Yao Wenyuan fired the first salvo of the Cultural Revolution in a Shanghai newspaper with his critique of Wu Han's Hai Rui Dismissed from Office.
The debate, initiated by Yao's article published in Shanghai, was followed by a massive barrage of Maoist criticism that eventually led to the purge of Wu and his superiors in Beijing's municipal party, government, and military structures.
In order to regain the "first-line" command of the CCP that had been "lost" to the Liuists who controlled the capital, challenged his personal authority, policy preferences, and revolutionary vision since the late 1950s, Mao decided to use Shanghai as the base to launch his attack on them in the second half of 1965.

Similarly, the attack in November 1965 on Beijing deputy mayor Wu Han and his historical play, "Hai Rui's Dismissal from Office," signaled the beginning of the Cultural Revolution.
Under the aegis of Zhou Enlai and later Deng Xiaoping, many intellectuals were restored to their former positions and warily resumed their pre-Cultural Revolution duties.
For the most part, important policy shifts reflected the alternating emphasis on political and economic goals and were accompanied by major changes in the positions of individuals in the political power structure.

Foreign Affairs - The Emperor Has No Clothes: Mao's Doctor Reveals the Naked Truth - John E. Wills, Jr.
On one occasion the chairman became fascinated with the history of a vigorous reformer, a mid-Ming Dynasty official named Hai Rui, who was dismissed after repeatedly condemning abuses of power at the imperial court.
Mao made it clear that Dr. Li's education in missionary schools would be no bar to his holding a position of the greatest trust under the chairman.
Mao was frequently charming when meeting someone for the first time; his willfulness and urge for total control became apparent only after the individual was irretrievably enmeshed in the inner circle.

Encouraged by Hu Qiaomu, Wu Han, who was a distinguished scholar on the Ming dynasty, published a number of articles about Hai Rui in the summer and fall of 1959.
It must be noted that in their historical content, Wu Han's essays and plays of 1959-1960 had nothing to do with the attack on and the subsequent dismissal of Marshal Peng Dehuai at the Lushan Conference in August 1959.
If Wu Han had been denounced in public in late 1964, he would not have become the prime target for the Maoists a year later; and Deng Tuo and the Beijing Municipal Party Committee would have encountered serious political trouble in 1964 instead of in 1965.

In his influential essay, Liao argued that "Li Huiniang" was a strong woman who refused to submit to authorities; the play did not advocate superstition.
(The play "Li Huainiang" was also under Maoist attack.) In perspective, mid-1964 could be seen as the beginning of the end for many of Beiping's establishment intellectuals and their political patrons.
