These organizations claim that Haidong Gumdo is rooted in the martial traditions of the Samurang, a group of elite warriors originally trained by a master named Seolbong in the ancient Goguryeo Kingdom (modern-day northern Korea).
The trials concluded that Haidong Gumdo was created by Kim Jeong-Ho and Na Hanil, both of whom had studied the Korean sword arts of Gicheonmun (under Bak Daeyang) and Simgeomdo (under Kim Changsik), and that the story of Jangbaeksan was a metaphor for this.
The essence of Haidong Gumdo is in "shimgum," a concept similar to the that of the Spanish "duende", as coined by the Spanish poet, Federico Garcia Lorca.

I have been studying haidong gumdo for about a year and a half now, and I love it.
Haidong Gumdo is a Korean Sword Art (Translates as East Sea Swordsmanship).
I know this has nothing to do with martial arts, gumdo, or dumog, but dyslexia always amazed me. My daughter once took an entire spelling test for class, where half the words were written on the front of the paper, and the second half were written on the back--she only got 50% correct.

 Haidong gumdo trial, translation request - Kendo World Forums
I found a reference to a document that is supposed to contain information on the trial concerning Haidong gumdo (a korean style claiming some ridiculus stuff about it's background) on e-budo.
From what I remember I think there was a lawsuit and the founder of HDGD admitted that HDGD was a modern construction and they came up with it rather than learning it from some old guy who passed the art onto them.
They taught it as "shimgumdo" until they sometime in the middle 80's renamed it haidong gumdo and made up some ridculous background story about "samurang" from ancient korea moving to Japan and laying the foundations for the japanese samurai caste.

Each style tends to have their little nuances and adjustments and Haidong Gumdo is no exception, but if you have studied Kendo or Iai (or a related art), the variations are minor (stance, grip).
It was quite clear to me that for the first 2 months, possibly longer, students learn how to correctly strike (big cuts and angles) and the more the student progresses the greater the expectation (naming all parts of the sword, cut names, etiquette and adding more cuts and angles).
