Haileybury maintains strong relations with schools in China and currently delivers the VCE program to a number of schools in China.
In 1999 Haileybury admitted the first girls into the Junior School and plans were annouced to develop parallel education for boys and girls from year 5 on all campuses.

He was educated at the Charterhouse and Trinity College, Oxford, was twice president of the union, and in 1844 graduated with first-class honours in classics.

University College School, founded in 1830 as part of University College London, was unique in that it neither took boarders nor gave religious education; indeed, by not limiting its intake to a specific religious denomination, it gained the claim of being the first truly "public" school, open to all.

After leaving Haileybury College in Melbourne in 1937, Russell worked for Australian Estates Company Ltd. He qualified by examination as a member of the Commonwealth Institute of Australia.
From 1941 to 1945 he served in the Australian Army in New Guinea and Bouganville successively as a platoon commander, intelligence officer and finally as adjutant of the 58/59 Infantry Battalion with the rank of captain.
He spent nearly a year in hospital in 1945 as a result of a leg wound and walked with a pronounced limp for the rest of his life.
